When it comes to web hosting solutions, one of the most pressing questions I’m always asked is how much storage space and bandwidth will be needed for a site. My advice, first of all, is ask that question before you sign up with any one hosting company in the first place. If you realize too late that you need more – or less – than the company offers, you might not be able to get yourself out of the contract.
That being said, if you’re just starting to think about creating a website and are asking this question then well done. You’re on your way to creating a secure and reliable website that won’t have visitors waiting hours to load in frustration.
First of all, you’ll need to figure out just what kind of content will be appearing on your site. If you’re selling clothes, for instance, then chances are you’ll want to have lots of images of your products so visitors can see what they are buying. But, if your site is simply an informative one, then images might not be one of your major drawing points. What about audio or video files? Will you be needing to display those?
How much space and bandwidth you will need depends on what you plan on hosting on your site. Plain text takes the least amount of space, while images will run you up much higher. If you’re planning on having a large amount of audio or video files, you’ll need to plan big. But don’t worry; there are web hosting solutions out there for all of your needs.
Most web hosting companies will offer you much more space than you need, or than you think you need. They assume you will never use all of it. But imagine if all of their customers did in fact use all of their allotted space. Do you think the system would still hold up?
It’s important not to factor in just storage and bandwidth when making your decision about a web hosting company. Just because one company is offering you 5 Gigs of space, does not mean that it is a better choice than the company offering just 500 Megs. You’ll also want to factor in such other considerations as support, price, and security.
When it comes to web hosting solutions, there is one important rule of thumb that you should remember: for every 10 web pages and 5 images you plan on hosting, you’ll need roughly 2 Megs of storage space. If in doubt, my simple golden rule is that simplicity is supreme. Don’t overload your site with any extra content that you don’t need. Not only will it slow things down, but it could look ugly and disorienting to the viewer.
If, after all of this, you’re still in doubt about your needs, just ask a few of the more reliable companies. If they’re experienced, you should get roughly the same answers from each, and you’ll be one step closer to knowing who you should sign up with.
