So you want to start up an Internet business? Congratulations! I’m sure by now you’ve read all there is to know about choosing the best web site hosting company for your needs. That would mean that you’ve also read all the horror stories, about people who lost all their data when the company all of a sudden shut down, and so on. Well, I’m here to be the bearer of bad news: things are about to get even harder.
While choosing a good and reliable hosting company is no doubt an important part of setting up your ecommerce business, it is by no means the end of the road. If you think from there it will be easy sailing, you’re not adequately preparing yourself for the things to come.
Personally, I found designing my website, uploaded all my content, and seeing it online was the fun part. I loved being able to send people my new URL, something that was all mine. I loved being able to change pictures or text as I saw fit. What was so hard about that? Why were people always complaining about the hassles that come with starting up a website? I wondered.
It was not long before I got my answer. I had chosen a good web site hosting company, I had designed and uploaded my page, and I sat back to reap the rewards. Only, they never came. I had no more than ten visitors in my first month, and I’m pretty sure they were mostly either myself or various members of my family.
What was wrong? I wondered. My site was online and looking great. Why weren’t people coming? That was when I realized that just because my site was online did not mean it was getting the kind of visibility I wanted it to have, and needed it to have.
I quickly set out to design a strategy of promotion and gaining visibility. From optimizing my webpage for the keywords that were related to my business to drafting and sending out press releases, I did whatever I could think of to get more people surfing on over to my site.
For some reason, I had expected my web site hosting company to go all of the marketing work for me. It wasn’t until I actually got up and running that I realized there was more to it than that.
My strategy worked. Within a few months – it took some patience – my traffic was going up. People were finding my site. They still weren’t buying too many of my products, but I knew that was going to be the next step – converting traffic into sales. I planned to celebrate my first step of getting traffic in the first place before I moved onto the next.
Now, my traffic not only gets a lot of traffic but it does a lot of business. I focus on keeping it fresh and up-to-date so people keep coming back.
