Getting the best domain name registration possible for your company can be tricky. People are often asking me what the best strategy is. Should they come up with some kind of catchy name? Should they buy something quickly before somebody else takes it? Should they just go with their company name? It’s an important dilemma to face – and to face early. While you don’t want to be rushing into any buying decisions, you also can’t wait too long. After all, the early bird catches the best domain name.
First of all, you need to think about who your target market is. Which country will most of your traffic be coming from? Do you want people to know which country your company is based in? That will tell you what kind of domain extension you should be looking into, for example .ca or .com. Of course, to be on the safe side, you could purchase all of the major extensions for the same domain, and forward them back to one. If you’re CompanyXYX.ca, you don’t want people to be going to CompanyXYX.com by accident and finding someone else’s page.
Second of all, do your research into hosting companies and registration services. Many of them are nothing more than a scam to get more money from you than you should otherwise have to pay. They could also register it in a way that makes it difficult for you to do anything with. Check out user reviews and go with the big trusted names out there. They’re not big and trusted for no reason. Of course, make sure they have an actual telephone number you can use to call them for support should you need it, and try it out first to make sure it works.
Personally, I think the best domain name registration tip is to choose one or two words that accurately reflect and include your keywords. Being specific about your URL will not only help people find you when they’re doing Internet searches, but will make it easier for someone who randomly stumbles upon your page to quickly know what your company is all about. For instance, if someone reads your business card which has the URL “bargainbooks.com,” they’re likely to know what line of work you’re in.
Along those same lines, don’t go with anything too word. The shorter the better, both because shorter URLs are easier to remember and because they’re easier to spell. I haven’t done any studies, but I’m sure the number of companies with complicated URLs that lose traffic thanks to people typing in the wrong thing is huge.
Also, avoid anything with hyphens or underscores. If your name is hyphenated because of a marriage or other reason, don’t go with your name. Or, shorten it to just one or an acronym. The fewer things there are to confuse your potential visitors, the better.
It’s hard to say what the best domain name registration strategy is. Above anything else, make sure you go with a reputable company. Check out 1 and 1 Internet for more information and to see what names are available for you today!
