CA Domain Name Registration

CA Domain Name Registration

This article is here to answer some of your basic questions when it comes to ca domain name registration. How does the dot-ca differ from the dot-com domain? What is a top-level domain? What the heck is a domain name in the first place? Don’t worry if you are feeling lost in all the acronyms and technical lingo. Read on to discover how to get the most for your business out of the Internet.

First of all, a domain name is the (usually) easy to remember names used to locate websites. Each website has an Internet Protocol, or IP, address that is used to locate computers on the Internet. But since they are always long and involved numbers that would be impossible to remember, we use domain names instead. So, for instance, if your website is fundogfacts.com, then that is your domain name – fundogfacts.com. Now, hopefully your website actually does cover fun dog facts or else your domain name isn’t doing much for you. But, we’ll get into that later.

A top-level domain is one that is used to denote either the type of organization hosting the site, or the country from which the site originates. The most common top-level designators are the three letter suffixes we see all the time: dot-com, dot-net, dot-edu, etc. Meanwhile, top-level country domains are usually two suffices, such as dot-ca, dot-us, or dot-uk.

So what exactly is ca domain name registration? What is the difference between a website with dot-ca and one with dot-com? Besides the obvious difference – that dot-ca is for websites within Canada, while dot-com is for any site meant for commercial purposes – there is one other major difference. The policies and administration of all dot-ca websites are set by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) and governed by Canadian law, while dot-com sites are managed under American law.

What is CIRA and what can it do for you? CIRA is a non-profit corporation that was incorporated in 1998. It is not only responsible for operating the dot-ca country code domains, but it also acts as a valuable resource for online Canadians. Whether you want to become a certified registrar, check to see if a dot-ca name is already registered, or to see who owns a dot-ca domain that you are interested in, CIRA is your one-stop shop.

Before you register a Canadian domain name, you should be sure about your business and who you are catering to. Do you only plan on doing business in Canada? Are you actually located in Canada? Make sure that registering a Canadian domain name does not limit you in any way.

Ca domain name registration is like any other. It can cost as little as $10 a year or less depending on the services that you opt into. Just make sure that before you jump in head first, you are aware of CIRA’s policies that are specific to Canadian websites. Good luck with your online ventures and happy web hosting hunting!
