Canadian Domain Name Registration

The .ca domain extension is one of the most highly coveted extensions out there. It seems those two little letters can add a lot of value to a company’s website. A recent study found that 45 percent of Canadian companies have already registered at least one website domain name with a .ca extension. But how exactly do you go about a Canadian domain name registration and how can you determine what is available? Read on to learn what steps you need to take to get your .ca website up and running today!

In order to register you new .ca domain name, you must submit a request to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) through a certified registrar. For a list of who qualifies as a certified registrar, you can visit the official CIRA website. Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis, so do not waste any time applying for the URL you want.

When you first register your URL, you will have the option of doing so for a period of anywhere between one to ten years. Do not opt for ten if your website is only a short-term project. CIRA charges fees dependent on which term you sign up for, which hovers around the $10/year mark, plus taxes. Keep in mind, registrars will also have their own fees that you should be aware of before committing to anything.

If your requested domain name is available and CIRA validates your request, you then have to complete the Canadian domain name registration procedure. You can do that through CIRA’s secure website. Once you are in their system, it becomes much easier to register multiple domain names down the road.

So how do you determine if the name you want is available? Well, your first step is to try the obvious – type it in. If a website already comes up, then it is taken. If you get a blank page, then visit the CIRA website and go to their WHOIS section. There, you will be able to lookup online if a domain name is available and if not, who is currently its manager. That service is free of charge.

The good thing about CIRA is that it does not bind you into a locking deal with any one certified registrar. Should you choose to change registrars, your registration period for your domain name will not be changed or lost. Your new registrar will also have to be certified by CIRA, but the list is many so you should not have a problem finding a new one. Keep in mind, however, that both your old and new registrars could have fees awaiting should you choose to do so.

The Canadian domain name registration process is a relatively simple and growing one. In 2000, CIRA had 60,000 .ca domain names registered. Today, that number is closer to 300,000 and the demand is continuing to surge. For more information and to get support along the way, visit 1 and 1 Internet.
