If Nature Castigates Those Who Don’t Masticate, Could It Also Misshape Midriffs of Those Without Knife and Forklifts?
Horace Fletcher (1849-1919), was an American health-food faddist of the Victorian era who earned the nickname "The Great Masticator," by arguing that food should be chewed 32 times before being swallowed, which became known as Fletcherizing.
Yours truly is a modern-day Fletcherist who believes in lifting food multiple times with weighted utensils before chewing and swallowing, thereby gaining strength in one's arms, exercising restraint and reducing appetite.
Fletcher argued that his mastication method increases the amount of strength a person could have while actually decreasing the amount of food they consumed. Fletcher promised that "Fletcherizing"would turn "a pitiable glutton into an intelligent epicurean," but he advised not to eat while angry or sad.
I believe entrepreneurs are particularly vulnerable to eating on the run while in a high emotional state either from someone accepting or rejecting their concept, so I recommend chumming with my invention, Knife and Forklift.
Although many people believed Fletcher's laboratory reports, the more important eye-opener to doctors and laymen was his series of experiments in the Yale Gymnasium. It was here that he participated, at the age of fifty-eight, in vigorous tests of strength and endurance versus the college athletes. The tests included: "deep-knee bending," holding out arms horizontally for a length of time, and calf raises on an intricate machine.
I can see my own biceps firming and my stomach shrinking from Knife and Forklifting at table.
Fletcher claimed to lift "three hundred pounds dead weight three hundred and fifty times with his right calf." The tests claim that Fletcher outperformed these Yale athletes in all events and that they were very impressed with his athletic ability at his old age. Fletcher attributed this to following his eating practices, and ultimately these tests, whether true or not, helped further endorse "Fletcherism" publicly.
At age 72, I can still knock out several sets of 30 puch-ups, walk for miles without fatigue and work 12 hours a day.
Just like Fletcher, I see many similarities between humans and functioning machines. He posited several analogies between machines and the human body. Just some of the comparisons he drew included: fuel to food; steam to blood circulation; steam gauge to human pulse; and engine to heart and in my case, using a forklift to place food in mouth.
