Grab more blog readers without losing your brand identity
It’s essential that you maintain your brand values and image on your
blog, but when the world is your oyster when it comes to blog topics, it
can be hard to know where to draw the line for relevance. Typically
with blogs to attract the greatest number of readers within the target
audience, I suggest that we look at topics that are relevant to the
broader industry not a very specific niche.
A good example to illustrate what I mean is retailers that dispense
‘healthcare’ products like reading glasses and hearing aids. The
specific niche topics that would be relevant on these blogs would
include choosing reading glasses, determining the strength, trends in
fashion, how hearing aids work, the different types of hearing aids etc.
Expanding to other industry-relevant topics to appeal to a target
audience would involve writing about eye health and hearing loss,
because these are things that individuals shopping for these items would
want to know, logically.
Some businesses worry that expanding the scope of topics is betraying
their brand image. Using the examples above, reading glasses retailers
worry that people will make assumptions that they are doctors or experts
in eye health and hearing aid retailers may have similar concerns. You
always want to stay in line with your brand values, but going this
route does not put you off course, and here are some points to help you
remember how and why that’s true.
- Just because you’re sharing resources about other things relevant to
your business but beyond your niche doesn’t misrepresent who you are or
what services you provide. Sharing these resources does prove you’re an
expert in your industry, and that you’re in touch with everything
that’s important and relevant to it.
- By providing additional resources you’re simply anticipating the
needs of your target market. It’s logical that people shopping for
reading glasses would like to learn more about eye health and vision
loss. If you’re proactive in presenting this information, they’ll
appreciate that you’re going that extra mile (even if the information is
coming from other resources and not your own personal knowledge) to
provide for their needs. If you don’t offer up this information, they’ll
just find it somewhere else anyway.
- While your blog does indirectly market your business, you don’t need
to follow the specific rules of marketing. Every post doesn’t need to
support your brand only by pushing your services.
- It’s harder to get readers for very niche topics. Your loyal blog
visitors already invested in the industry might be interested, as would
those specifically searching for the types of services you offer. But,
if you’re serious about attracting others that could become future
clientele, only focusing on the niche topics just isn’t going to do it
for you.
- If you’re only focusing on the niche topics, you may be overselling
as far as your readers are concerned, and they won’t keep reading if
they feel that way.
My suggestion to those that understand the above, but still aren’t
100% convinced, is to continue to maintain the balance between niche and
industry general. But you can always make it very clear with footnote
style references (rather than post body text links) that some of your
general information is coming from other sources that way they know
exactly what your intentions are.

Re: Tactics for Blog Traffic
- One really easy way to get yourself blogging more often is to repurpose your blog posts...republish them on article sites (or put a couple of short blog posts together into one article), put them in your newsletters, put a quantity of blog posts together into an ebook or even a full-fledged book. Also turn your blog posts into audios, for blog "readers" to listen to rather than read; or a video, for "readers" to watch. Again, group several into a teleclass, etc.
And vice versa. Look at your existing articles, ebooks, teleclasses -- can you break them down into several or a dozen blog posts? This also has the advantage of having an ongoing theme for a period of time on your blog, which brings readers back to read the next installment. Plus the added bonus that you can sit down with one article and write 3 blog posts in one sitting, then schedule them out...and go on vacation!
Lots more that can be done in this manner, let your creativity be your guide!
Successful Blog Marketing Tips
- So you have a blog and want to market it and make it a successful blog. How do you do this? How do you go about getting your blog out there to be seen and known by others? How do you draw readers and keep them coming back for more? There are many ways to get your blog out there and known by others. This can be known as challenging for some and just quite easy for others. If you have ever had a successful blog before then you know what it takes. You are not going to get anywhere by just setting up a blog and hoping that people will find it and read it. You are not going to gain any links, nor a higher search engine ranking by just having a blog. This is all part of blog marketing. Anyone can do it, even you.
Successful blog marketing tip number one. When you first create a blog, of course it is unheard of. No one knows anything about the blog unless you give them the link and show it to them. However, for a new blog that has never been seen, there are many ways to get it out there and known. You just need to know how. The first thing that you can do is to allow RSS feeds be taken from your blog. Allow other websites and blogs to publish your same exact blog. When you do this, they are giving you a link back to your blog, and also telling their readers all about your blog. You will get more traffic than ever with this tool. RSS feeds are wonderful for promoting and getting your blog out there.
Blog marketing tip number two. Update your blog frequently. We can not put enough emphasis on this tip. If you tell your readers that you are going to update your blog daily, then do it. If you tell them that you will be writing in your blog weekly, don’t let them down. Your readers are what makes your blog successful. You may not realize this in the beginning, and you will have few readers in the beginning as well, but you will eventually build a readership base and have people checking out your blog regularly. Maybe you do not plan on telling your readers how often you will update your blog. That is ok too. However, think about this, if you were reading a blog on a weekly basis, and you expected to see the blog that you like to read updated at least once a week, you would be very disappointed to find out that it was not. Sure, things happen that might prevent you from updating, and that is expected, and excused, but week after week can hurt you and cause you to lose readers.
Tip number three. While you are working on your readership base, and trying to gain readers, you are going to find that commenting on blogs that are relevant to yours will surely help. Find a blog that is on the same topic to yours, or close to it and leave comments. You can also make a track back with your blog postings to comment on your own blog. Doing so will probably more than likely give someone else the urge to track back to your blog. Which will be good for it as well. Commenting on blogs that get many comments will make yours be seen by those interested in that market. You will gain traffic and readers that way, and it is easy as well as free.
The fourth blog marketing tip. Learn and apply SEO to your blogs. SEO is search engine optimization. You are going to find that if you want your blog to go anywhere, you need SEO, and you need to know how to use it to the advantage of your blog. Just like a website, a blog will be better off optimized.
Re: Looking for a Blog topic?
- Great advice GT. This and every other quality forum, every book you read, every article or website can be a source for your own writing.
Find a topic, blog about it and LINK BACK to the source (or acknowledge the author if it is a book - or add an Amazon link).
Every time you link out a good site you are giving your readers value. Don't worry about losing traffic or getting/not getting back-links. Just DO IT! It will make your blog much more informative and therefore more valuable and more attractive. The best blogs always have tons of links heading out to whatever good stuff the blogger finds.
Read, learn, write, link. Read, learn... etc.
Re: What exactly do you need to start a business
- You should have a proper business plan and strategy to follow it for long period, your skills should help your company and help to bring business and generate leads, Your plans should more focus on marketing your business and maintaining the brand identity of your business.
