Do you want to be in newspapers or on TV just for the fun of it, or do you have a specific objective in mind? I can't emphasize how important it is to have clearly defined your goals before you start your public relations campaign. These are objectives that you must decide for yourself.
Ask yourself the following questions:
● What objectives do you want to achieve with a media relations campaign?
● How big do you want your business to grow?
● At what rate do you want your business to grow?
● What target market do you want to reach?
● How do you want to be perceived by the media?
● What are your short-term and long-term media goals?
When I began in the field, I assumed that, before clients decided to hire me, they had outlined their PR objectives, knew where they wanted their business to go, and knew what objectives they wanted to achieve. I was wrong. I now have prospective clients clearly outline their objectives before we start a campaign. I used to spend the bulk of my initial consultations with clients selling myself and my service. Now the bulk of the time is spent finding out not only who the prospective client is, but what he or she wants to accomplish and what objectives need to be met. The bottom line is, if you don't know where you're going, how will you know when you've arrived?
