Hitting a PR Homerun
Once you've reached the point of being interviewed by the media, even if you have hired a public relations firm to handle your campaign, you and you alone have to take over. How you look, how you sound, how you carry yourself, your demeanor… these are now what become important. Studies show that 93 percent of what an audience reacts to has to do with the messenger, and only 7 percent has to do with the message itself. Remember, when it comes to public relations, you are the messenger and the messenger must sell the message.
You don't have to be an actor to give a successful interview, you just have to be professional, and that takes practice. I suggest everyone take at least a few hours of professional media training, especially before appearing on television. But, if you choose not to hire a professional, at least make yourself a basic check list. Do you have a list of the main points you want to cover? Have you stood yourself in front of a mirror and asked yourself some anticipated questions, reviewing how you'll answer the questions and how you'll look? Have you asked a co-worker or friend to conduct a mock interview with you? Have you reviewed your wardrobe, your outer image? No? Well, get moving. You owe it to yourself to give the media the best presentation and interview you can. Did I mention the importance of hiring a professional media trainer? Yeah, I thought so.
