PR JOBS: WORK EXPERIENCE = A WIN-WIN SITUATION!
I think I may have found a solution to our problems.
We have been seriously over-worked for the past few weeks and have struggled to stay on top of everything. I’m not complaining of course – lots of companies, and lots of PR agencies in Staffordshire, would kill to be in my position.
In fact you could say we are defying the recession by actually bringing in business at a time when many are on the brink. I would go as far as to say the recession is a bit of a myth – it’s not really affecting us and I’m doing better now than we were this time last year (and that was a record year).
Perhaps companies are using the recession as an excuse to get rid of people?
Anyway, back to the original point – being a small PR agency in Staffordshire we are very conscious of the need to hold onto my existing clients. It’s all well and good bringing in new ones, but what if we then do a shoddy job for the long-standing clients who’ve kept us going for five years?
At the same time, we have some pretty challenging targets for 2009 and we won’t hit them if we don’t bring in new clients.
So what’s the answer? Two words – work experience!
A guy called Ben Quinney started his unofficial placement yesterday, and judging from his work over the past couple of days he’s going to be a great help.
Although he’s only working a few hours a day – it’s a very informal arrangement and he comes and goes when he pleases – he will free up plenty of time for me to work on new and existing campaigns and keep everyone happy.
And he may even help me bring in some new customers!
So it suits us, and it also suits Ben - he's starting a Masters degree in September and wants to get some work experience while he's at a loose end. It will look good on his CV when he comes to look for a proper job in a year or so.
However, this does create another problem – what do I do when he goes back to university in September?
I think the answer to that is not to prevaricate as I would usually, but to line up another placement for the Autumn. So if anyone in my blogosphere would like to put their name forward, send me an email.
They would have to be in or around North Staffordshire though of course.
