Managing Your Online Reputation
Managing your reputation is an important component of online public relations. A business or individual needs to track, control, and manage their reputation. This helps you control your professional image and maintain a positive brand identity. Here are some general tips to consider when managing your online reputation.
- Create official profiles on popular sites. This is an essential component of branding. By creating and maintaining your own profiles you are putting the kind of information about you that you want out there. It also keeps others from falsely registering profiles under your name and spreading misinformation.
- Find out what others are saying about you. It might not all be flattering, but it's important to know what's being said about you online. Unless you know what's out there you can't respond to what others have to say. If you find good information, you can publicize it.
- Stay on top of things. It's important not to get lazy about monitoring your reputation. We recommend regularly checking for information that could potentially be harmful. You can also take advantage of automatic monitoring tools such as Google Alerts. This way you'll stay informed.
- Watch the results. It's important to find out what kind of information is in the search results. When you Google your brand what do you see? If it's positive information? Great. But if you find Rip Off Reports or negative comments toping the pages, you've got some work to do.
- Keep in mind that anything can be put online. Don't assume that what you do in your personal life won't find it's way online. Conversations and private communications could find their way online. You don't want anything embarrassing to find it's way to the blogosphere, so watch your back.
- Think before you speak. Unless you want to stir up some controversy, it's important to watch what you say and be careful what you post. Anything you say can and will be used against you when it comes to social media.
- If necessary remain private. You can often hide your social networking profiles from the public. This can keep unauthorized individuals from seeing your information, good or bad. But remember it has privacy features have their limitations.
- Don't just stand there, do something. If you find something that could be damaging to your reputation, do something about it. If possible remove the offending content. Otherwise, you need to decide the best course of action. Would respond help clear up the problem or would it be better to ignore the information and bury the information in the search engines?
