Healthcare in a time of public engagement
The healthcare industry is under an inordinate amount of pressure. Over the past five years, epidemics of communicable and lifestyle-related diseases, growing aging populations, and advances in medical technology have created an enormous and unmet demand for healthcare. On top of this, the worst economic climate in decades is now intensifying this crisis.
Simultaneously, there has been an increase in the interactions among opposing publics. With the advances in digital technology and social media, the general public is more empowered than ever to freely discuss business and societal issues that have previously not been part of popular culture and conversation. Together, these changes have created a complex operational climate for organizations involved in the healthcare industry; one that is continually being shaped by the public's engagement in it. Because healthcare is crucial to personal and societal welfare, each individual is not only a healthcare stakeholder but also has multiple stakes in health - as a consumer, patient, citizen, professional, advocate, and caregiver - and is a member of numerous health publics.
It is more crucial than ever for those involved in the healthcare industry to make deeper, more open connections with their publics; engage with individuals with awareness and appreciation of their multiple health stakes; and influence personal, professional and policy decisions without seeking to control them. Healthcare professionals must understand and address the expectations of their particular publics, as well as society as a whole, while making certain that their publics appreciate the benefits of their products and services, as well as the significant role that they play in advancing both personal and public health. This constant, two-way practice of health engagement is vital to building trust and has effects that extend far beyond communications to operations.
Increasingly, companies, governments, and individuals are conscious of and focused on improving public health-issues like obesity and health literacy that affect personal health and well-being in local, national, and global communities. To succeed in today's rapidly evolving environment, healthcare companies, brands, and organizations must engage with a broader array of stakeholders on the topics that matter to them, communicate with them through the channels they use, and build their trust through authenticity and shared purpose. Engagement is particularly important in public health, in which all stakeholders must be roused and fully immersed in the issues at hand to solve key health problems around the United States and the world.
With public health issues becoming progressively more personal and impossible to ignore, healthcare organizations must tap into the fact that each individual has multiple stakes in health so we can make people cognizant, appreciative, and inspired to act.
