Article Overview: When approaching search engine optimisation, the first task is to decide on the most appropriate keywords for your business. In order to come to a conclusion about the best and most relevant keywords, so that they can be applied to the company's website and a SEO campaign, research must be undertaken on an initial list of potential terms, which includes looking at traffic volumes. Keyword Forms That Must Be Considered For SEO – Part 1

When approaching search engine optimisation, the first task is to decide on the most appropriate keywords for your business. In order to come to a conclusion about the best and most relevant keywords, so that they can be applied to the company's website and a SEO campaign, research must be undertaken on an initial list of potential terms, which includes looking at traffic volumes. Punch Communications ensures any research holistically captures as many options as possible in preliminary lists so here is the first of two articles offering some tips on keyword forms from the leading agency:

Consider singular and plural keywords

Investigate both singular and plural terms to find out which is being searched for most frequently by people, such as ‘SEO agency' versus ‘SEO agencies'. Of course, an element of common sense can be applied for some keywords or phrases and through a large amount of research undertaken across a wide range of sectors, Punch has found singular terms are used more commonly than the equivalent plural in product searches, for example ‘smartphone' and not ‘smartphones'. Examine all the possibilities on a case by case basis and you may even decide it is as equally important for your business to optimise for both the singular and the plural on a specific term.

Research both branded and generic keywords

Branded and standard product keywords can be as important to consider as generic terms; let's take a cheese supplier as an example. Singular, generic terms that may be considered are ‘cheese supplier', ‘speciality cheese supplier' and ‘Italian cheese supplier' but a larger amount of people could be searching for ‘Parmesan supplier' or ‘Gorgonzola supplier'. Similarly, a computer repair shop may find traffic volumes are higher for certain makes and models, such as ‘Toshiba laptop repair' or ‘Toshiba C660-19E repair'. Again, you may wish to optimise a mixture of branded and generic keywords, helping to give the wide range of searchers the opportunity to select the most relevant search engine result to them.

Although you may think you know what your potential customers will use to try and find your type of business in a search engine, most likely based upon your search habits, it is important to consider all options in the first stage of research. Look out for my next article that will look at long and short-tail keywords and double meanings.

Re: Keyword Selection Re: Keyword Selection - Hi All, Very interesting topic of discussion! Website success mainly depends upon the target keywords so the keywords should be relevant to website theme. Long tail keywords often rank easily in SERP. You can also use Ad word Keyword tool for keyword selection. Keyword having less competition and high monthly search volume are easy to rank.
Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategies Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategies - I'd disagree with the first point. Keyword research is important, but it should not be the complete focus when doing niche research. A niche is typically made up of thousands of keywords, and researching them all is very difficult, because the keyword tools won't tell you what most of them are. Plus a niche is not a bunch of keywords, it is a demographic interested in a particular topic. You need to learn about the people in this demographic. Keyword research tells you their search habits and gives clues to competitiveness and potential profit, but you are looking at through a very narrow window of a much bigger picture.
