The World Wide Web doesn’t shut down for a Christmas break so should you?

Article Overview: Everybody who celebrates Christmas likes to have a rest and many companies shut down for a few days, giving staff a well earned break. Certain industries, such as retail, have never been able to afford that luxury and with the advent of the digital age, online PR, social media engagement and search engine optimisation, a leading UK agency suggests no business should cease all communication for days on end, even if it is a holiday. If staff are able to spare just fifteen minutes per day during their time off it could make a big difference to your business - here are some scheduling tips to follow.

Everybody who celebrates Christmas likes to have a rest and many companies shut down for a few days, giving staff a well earned break.
Social Media
People won't stop logging onto social media sites over the holiday; in fact, it's not a silly assumption to think there will be more action than usual on the networks due to users not being at work. People will be sending season's greetings, sharing holiday photos and looking for ways to keep themselves from getting bored.
Ensure you continue to regularly post to platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter because your audience may have even more time than usual to engage. Depending on the type of business you might especially want to let your follows know about a sale or if you're in the UK, are you freezing VAT in January? Ask staff if they can take responsibility for a day each and then schedule times in advance, that way the person in question can make arrangements to have access to the internet at particular times without feeling like they have to spend the whole day working.
Blogging
If your website contains a blog as a way of keeping its content fresh for search engine optimisation purposes, then you know Google won't be taking a holiday. For the same reason as above, there could potentially be more people searching for more things whilst they are on annual leave so try and take the time to keep up with posts, even if they're short and sweet.
Ask staff to write content in advance and create a schedule detailing which posts should be published on which day. If one person looks after the blog then they might be best placed to upload the posts or ask the individual writers to do it themselves when they have a moment during the planned days.
PR
Journalists can find themselves very short of news just before and over Christmas so use the opportunity wisely and release some news. Even better, do you have any stories that the media will be able to use that are related to Christmas trends, winter weather or anything feel-good or festive and quirky?
Ask relevant staff to find out from target journalists what their schedules are in the run up to and over Christmas to understand what they might be looking for and when that might be. A couple of telephone calls and emails to the media each day might be just what's needed to obtain a great piece of coverage when your competitors have taken the day off to relax. Also if you keep one eye on the local, national and online media when others are napping a story may come up that you can capitalise on.
