Summer Sales

Everyone knows that retail is seasonal, but how do you plan for upcoming seasons? Do you take into account your sales volume from last year? Do you restock similar items to the popular ones from last year?

These aren't bad strategies, but 2009 is going to be different, you can bet on that. First, everyone is talking about the recession, but by this summer it seems like consumer sentiment, and therefore consumer spending, will have rebounded somewhat.

This means that using last year's sales numbers may not be a good bet, and that the season's sales may fluctuate quite a lot due to the fickle nature of consumers, especially with all the news that is streaming at Americans these days.

To take this into account, order less, but order more often to be flexible. Take some time to explore innovative and interesting new products instead of the standard summer formula items. Branch out of your standard inventory lines to offer complementary items that shoppers may not expect to find in your store. What's better than a pleasantly surprised customer?
