Insure your money - should’ve would’ve will now!

Written by: Claudio Cipriani

Article Overview: Originally published Nov 28, 2008 (but still relevant), it discussed an example of a lawyer who lost $1 Million in the current crisis and bought a life insurance policy for the same amount. I present options to insure your investments so that one doesn't have to find themselves in a similar predicament.

Insure your money - should’ve would’ve will now!

I have been hearing on the local radio stations an advertisement for a life insurance agent who says that a client of his in the law profession asked him to set up an additional $1 Million dollar life policy for him, representing the amount lost in the current financial crisis. This sounds like a panicked reaction to a devastating loss, but it also makes me think - what is the point of taking out a life policy - the person would never get to use it!

There are many vessels available to consumers to insuring their property. There is home insurance, auto insurance, business insurances, life insurance, title insurance and health insurance but have you ever considered investment insurance? Think about it - guarantees on your money. Death guarantees, deposit guarantees at maturity, resets. One avenue for investing your money is to use Mutual Funds. These aren’t are risky as the stock market, but as part of a well diversified portfolio, they provide a fantastic vessel for making money - oh wait…the market has crashed. There are some people out there who aren’t as stressed as others - Some people have their money in a type of investment vessel called Guaranteed Income funds (a.k.a seg funds, annuities etc).

They offer the same fund options as most mutual fund companies, but the key is that you pay a bit more to ensure:
a) deposit account guarantee - the contract is typically 10 years and you can opt to have 75% guaranteed or even 100%. Consider your funds last year vs this year. The news has reported that trillions of dollars have been lost in market pull backs that will take years of robust growth to return… In a seg fund, it wouldn’t really bother you, because your deposit balance is insured!
b) Resets - many funds offer annual resets - as the value grows, the guaranteed value also grows, reflecting the hight value of your investment.
c) Death benefits - Guaranteed investment funds are life insurance products - as such they have beneficiaries - they can pass your estate and go directly to the people you want to have the money (and not the taxman!)

We have all taken a blow in this economic downturn - some more than others. It is easy to fall into panic mode and become reactive - i say stop yourself, take an assessment of the situation and proactively seek out a solution that make long and short term sense.

Re: Do you have an affinity to making money??? Re: Do you have an affinity to making money??? - Hey Yinka, Of course I like making money. However, I get more satisfaction from doing what I love and have a passion for that brings in money vs. doing something I hate and making money. There's little satisfaction if you're working hard for someone else and making them money, while you make a measly paycheck. Some people are okay with this, but they may not be as happy as they could be if they did what they loved to do. In either case, it's important to do what you love. The money will follow.
Angel Investors- Angel Investors- - For me, family and friends was the best place to start. They are no different than strangers, they both don't want to lose money, but the key is the understanding of risks. I have a good reputation for making money and business, so it wasn't a huge risk. The investor understood the risk, and I made it a point to address the fact that they could lose all their money, not that they will. Their confidence in me and my business outweighed the fear of losing their investment. Now, i don't expect that everyone would feel comfortable approaching their friends and family for big money, but I saw it as if they put big money in the stockmarket, and real estate and other investments... then why not invest in me and my idea? If they were going to let people they didn't know manage their money, then why not invest in someone who really cares and truly has your best interest in mind? I did not approach the situation that I was going to lose their money, I was confident that I was going to succeed whether they invested in me or not.
Re: Money never sleeps Re: Money never sleeps - Well I guess it goes back to the old cliché of "don't work for money, but learn to have money working for you." However, aside from using your money to invest in things like property, stocks, etc... what are some of the other ways? I feel that the average Google AdSense user can't even make enough each month to buy a new pair of shoes. So in that respect, I wouldn't count on AdSense to help you earn more money while you sleep.

Re: What Do you Prefer More - Time or Money Re: What Do you Prefer More - Time or Money - I tried to answer this question, and I think it is just like what came first the egg or the hen. I want money, everybody loves money, money can buy you time, and some other things too (like food). Personally I know that if I had a bigger budget I could use it to save time and use the time I "created" for other tasks. But I want time too, there is never enough time, even if you have all the time in the world. I noticed that when I have busy busy days, I can manage my time better. Many people suffer from this problem, the more things we have to do, we can find more time to do them. So I want both, I want money to by me time to make more money for more time, and to travel around the world.
