Trip Chowdhry, a Global Equities Research analyst, says you shouldn’t expect revamped Mac desktops anytime soon—at least ones with big changes. Tough economic times, a shrinking desktop market and strong notebook sales make this an unwise move for Apple, he said. However, not releasing new desktops is a terrible idea—and totally against Apple’s “DNA,” according to the Sellers Research group (that’s me).
“In this environment where nobody is buying anything and you come out with a kick ass product, you might get a lot of wows and woos, but that does not convert into sales,” the analyst said. “So that’s a wasted effort.”
In fact, he, along with Needham & Company analyst Charles Wolf, say that most likely only a form factor refresh would jump start the desktop line-up. They think that 2010 would be a more reasonable year for Apple to release any form factor upgrades for its desktop line, including the Mac mini.
I don’t know about major form factor changes. However, I do think we’ll see substantial upgrades to Apple’s entire desktop line-up before summer’s end (the iMac and Mac mini this spring, and the Mac Pro no later than July). After all, the entire line is way overdue for an update. Both the Mac mini and Mac Pro haven’t received an update in well over a year, and the current iMac is 10 months old.
Also, Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook and Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer have all said that the company will innovate its way through the tough economic times. I fully expect them to do this. Any else would signal a major change in the Apple philosophy.
