Analyst says we shouldn’t expect revamped Mac desktops anytime soon—but I beg to differ

Article Overview: Trip Chowdhry, a Global Equities Research analyst, says you shouldn’t expect revamped Mac desktops anytime soon—at least ones with big changes. Tough economic times, a shrinking desktop market and strong notebook sales make this an unwise move for Apple, he told Wired. Trip Chowdhry, a Global Equities Research analyst, says you shouldn’t expect revamped Mac desktops anytime soon—at least ones with big changes. Tough economic times, a shrinking desktop market and strong notebook sales make this an unwise move for Apple, he said. However, not releasing new desktops is a terrible idea—and totally against Apple’s “DNA,” according to the Sellers Research group (that’s me).

“In this environment where nobody is buying anything and you come out with a kick ass product, you might get a lot of wows and woos, but that does not convert into sales,” the analyst said. “So that’s a wasted effort.”

In fact, he, along with Needham & Company analyst Charles Wolf, say that most likely only a form factor refresh would jump start the desktop line-up. They think that 2010 would be a more reasonable year for Apple to release any form factor upgrades for its desktop line, including the Mac mini.

I don’t know about major form factor changes. However, I do think we’ll see substantial upgrades to Apple’s entire desktop line-up before summer’s end (the iMac and Mac mini this spring, and the Mac Pro no later than July). After all, the entire line is way overdue for an update. Both the Mac mini and Mac Pro haven’t received an update in well over a year, and the current iMac is 10 months old.

Also, Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook and Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer have all said that the company will innovate its way through the tough economic times. I fully expect them to do this. Any else would signal a major change in the Apple philosophy.

Re: How many computers do you have? Re: How many computers do you have? - [quote="OmnivoreInk":3jpwh47m]Here's a question... I'm just curious... how many computers do each of us have? I've got a desktop computer - a Dell... about 4 years old now, I think, and a laptop, a Sony Vaio...which I bought when I hoped to be doing a lot of travelling around the country...that never came to pass (and looks even less likely now with gas prices!) but it's still fun to be able to carry from room to room of my house... I don't own any fancy palm pilots...not even an Ipod...[/quote:3jpwh47m] I had 2 HP desktops - at different times, but then I got my Dell laptop - its about 4 1/2 years old at this time. I eventually upgraded my desktop and got another Dell which is about 3 1/2 year old. My brother and father both got new desktops with a nice flat screen monitor and all the usually accessories for right about $600. The computer even had 160 GB of storage space and a 3 year in office repair warranty. I bought the service agreement on both computers, but wouldn't get it on the desktop again. When my original warranty expired on the laptop, I extended it another 2 years. In addition, I bought a new larger hard drive on Ebay and have basically a new laptop under warranty for just over $300. I have definitely used the warranty on the laptop and have gotten many times my investment out of it. I would not finance with Dell again - I'd be way ahead by using a low interest credit card. I did finance the laptop and paid about $250 for financing on a $1100 computer over 3 years. Shri

Re: Quoting for Jobs Re: Quoting for Jobs - What are you selling? If you are sending 'blind quotes' after a very loose meeting or contact, you are probably wasting a lot of your time in the follow up. How much 'prequalifying' do you do before you submit a quote or proposal? If you've done your homework, you shouldnt have to do much follow up - unless something significantly changed at the prospects location. Jude
