My call: Snow Leopard by July, quad-core iMacs by October
Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu thinks Mac OS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") may not arrive until late summer or early fall. I think the beast will begin prowling in the June-July time period. However, I agree withe Wu that we'll see a quad-core iMac before year's end that will capitalize on Snow Leopard's beefed up support for multiple core processors.
Wu, like many other Mac users (such as me), was hoping for a quad-core iMac, as opposed to the dual-core machine Apple released last week. Now he says it makes more sense for Apple to wait for Snow Leopard, which takes better advantage of the quad core processors, and for lower-power parts from Intel that don’t run quite so hot.
That makes sense. I think we'll said such machines arrive around October -- in time for the holiday shopping season. I'd also love to see the 28-inch version that was rumored before 2009's Macworld Conference & Expo. I'm dubious we'll see such a critter, but I'd gladly cough up the dough for a bigger iMac with a multi-media center slant.
Even if that doesn't happen, I'll be in line to buy a quad-core iMac. The recent iMac (and Mac mini and Mac Pro) upgrades were nice. But there was nothing about them exciting or different enough to make me sell my current high-end iMac and move up.
Although I do wish someone would release an adapter that would let me use the 24-inch Cinema Display with Mini DisplayPort on my iMac, which has no Mini DisplayPort. I'd love to be running two monitors -- and have one that would also work seamlessly with my MacBook such as the 24-inch Cinema Display.
