Nothing about the revamped Mac desktop line-up tempts my wallet

I guess I should thank Apple. Following yesterday's announcement regarding revs of its entire desktop line-up, there's nothing to tempt me to spend my money.

Don't get me wrong. The announcements aren't bad. More bang for the buck is always good. And the Mac Pro and Mac mini announcements are way overdue. Of all the announcements, I think the Mac Pro is the most significant. But where's a new 30-inch Cinema Display? Also, I still think the mini is overpriced; all things considered, the iMac is a better value.

Speaking of which, I'm a big iMac fan. But there's nothing about the refresh to make me sell my current 24-inch aluminum model and go for a new one. At least nothing that I've noticed so far.

Most disappointing for me: there's no quad-core model. There's no Blu-ray, no HDMI port, and FireWire 400 is gone (though FireWire 800 remains). Of course, this is true of all the updated desktops, not just the iMac.

Plus, I don't think the better prices are enough to overcome the flagging Mac desktop sales. I hope I'm wrong.

Desktop or Laptop? Desktop or Laptop? - I'm currently looking to buy a new PC because my existing 3 year old Dell Inspiron 8600 15.4" widescreen laptop is constantly low on memory (it only had 40 GB to start with), and heavy to lug around. But I'm having a little trouble deciding between whether to buy another laptop or to go for a more powerful desktop. If you were to buy a new computer for both personal and business use, which would you buy: desktop or laptop? PC or Mac? Thanks

Laptop vs notebook Laptop vs notebook - According to Wikipedia, and as I had suspected: A laptop computer, or simply laptop (also notebook computer or notebook), is a small mobile computer, which usually weighs 2-18 pounds (1-6 kilograms), depending on size, materials, and other factors. I have a desktop computer - a Dell Dimension 6600 (or some number like that!) and a laptop computer, a Sony VAIO. You can get a laptop, much like a desktop, with a variety of memory options, but I'd advise you to get one with the most memory and power that you can.

Re: How many computers do you have? Re: How many computers do you have? - [quote="OmnivoreInk":3jpwh47m]Here's a question... I'm just curious... how many computers do each of us have? I've got a desktop computer - a Dell... about 4 years old now, I think, and a laptop, a Sony Vaio...which I bought when I hoped to be doing a lot of travelling around the country...that never came to pass (and looks even less likely now with gas prices!) but it's still fun to be able to carry from room to room of my house... I don't own any fancy palm pilots...not even an Ipod...[/quote:3jpwh47m] I had 2 HP desktops - at different times, but then I got my Dell laptop - its about 4 1/2 years old at this time. I eventually upgraded my desktop and got another Dell which is about 3 1/2 year old. My brother and father both got new desktops with a nice flat screen monitor and all the usually accessories for right about $600. The computer even had 160 GB of storage space and a 3 year in office repair warranty. I bought the service agreement on both computers, but wouldn't get it on the desktop again. When my original warranty expired on the laptop, I extended it another 2 years. In addition, I bought a new larger hard drive on Ebay and have basically a new laptop under warranty for just over $300. I have definitely used the warranty on the laptop and have gotten many times my investment out of it. I would not finance with Dell again - I'd be way ahead by using a low interest credit card. I did finance the laptop and paid about $250 for financing on a $1100 computer over 3 years. Shri
