iMac to be retired this year? I don’t think so

Ian Lamont, writing for The Industry Standard says he thinks that Apple will announce no later than Sept. 30, 2009, that the iMac is being discontinued. I think he’s waaay off base, but you have to admire his penchant for details.

Lamont has an interesting argument, and one that I’ve heard others espouse. It’s basically that more and more people are moving to laptops (which is true). But Lamont says that the icing on the cake is the pricing of the iMac in the current economy.

“The iMac dropped below the $2,000 price point in the early part of this decade, but current models still start at $1,200,” he says. “PCs dropped below $1,000 years ago. Higher-end desktop PCs from Lenovo, Dell and other well-known manufacturers handily beat the base iMac’s hardware specs, yet cost less than $800. He concludes that: “The iMac won’t be able to survive a recession, or the unstoppable trend toward cheaper, smaller, and more powerful computing hardware.”

Interesting points, but I personally think the iMac has at least another five years (minimum) of life left. Why? I’m not going to get into the pricing issue here; you can see my April 13 editorial for that.

And, yes, many folks are moving to laptops, but plenty of people will still stay with laptops until the power/price point of a laptop equals that of a desktop. When that happens, I think most people will go with laptops, accompanied by an external monitor and docking station for when they want more screen real estate or when they put their Mac to bed for the night.

For the foreseeable future, you’re going to get more bang for the buck with a desktop. For instance, the top-of-the-line iMac costs $2,199 and offers more power, more storage and a much bigger screen than the top-of-the-line 15-inch MacBook Pro ($2,499) 17-inch MacBook Pro ($2,799).

Also, folks like me, whose livelihood depends on a working Mac, need a back-up Mac in case one does down. I can buy aforementioned top-of-the-line iMac and an entry-level MacBook ($1,299) for around $3,700. If I went with, say, a mid-range MacBook Pro and Apple’s 24-inch Cinema Display ($899) the total would be around $3,400. So for 300 bucks more, I’d have two computers (one desktop and one laptop), more storage and more computing power than going with a straight laptop. In fact, that’s exactly the set-up I have.

I also think that Apple will make some major revisions to the iMac later this year (quad-core chips, among other things) and when the economy begins to bounce back (an iMac with more home entertainment features).

Check back on Oct. 1, 2009? I’m 99.9 percent sure the iMac will still be alive and well—and will have moved to a quad-core architecture on at least the high-end model.

I have a friend who is also a councillor but he is retired and what he has said to me on many occasions is that whilst he loves the job, he can only give it his best attention now that he is retired and would not have been able to do it when he had a full time job. I think it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that as a councillor you are on an ego trip and it is only a few hours a week but the reality can be very different so I think you are wise to concentrate on your online business until a later date when you may have more time, regards, Mal.
Retired Executives Retired Executives - Hello everyone. Does anyone know where I could be in contact with retired executive? Reason I ask is because I am in seek of a mentor to assist me with my business and I am having a hard time finding a mentor in Canada. It seems like executives in the US and Europe are lot more helpful than in Canada, as I have contacted a few individuals in Canada and they have either been rude or simply did not reply back to my e-mail. Does anyone know where I can find some retired executives, as I might have a better luck with them? Thanks!
Removing Toxix People Removing Toxix People - Sometimes its those closest too us that want to hold us back. Not intentionally but more like a case of Crabs in the Bucket. What I do, when I cant oust myself from it, is to just not talk about what I am working on around those people. Why hold up your 'baby' to people who are going to tell you all the things wrong with it? I then, and this is the really important part, make sure I have other people, supporters etc. that will boost me up. These people come in all shapes and sizes, from my neighbour who is a retired brand manager at GM to my little sister who happens to run a daycare while studying to be an RCMP officer! ;0) I think Jesus said it something like this, dont cast your pearls before swine. :0)
Re: This is ilia sviatenko Re: This is ilia sviatenko - Me and my dad currently withdrew from the spa business, we dont know anything about it. we were just silent partners. That is ok, because there are a lot of different opportunities out there right now. I recently started to work at Solera. This is an Ontario solar company. Solar panels are a booming business right now in Ontario thanks to the new government act, where the government buys energy that you produce. 80 cents for 1 kwh. If you install 10 kwh solar modules, you will be producing about 12,000 kwh a year. 12,000 x .80= $9600 year or $800 a month. The best part about the solar modules is that they need little or no maintenance, they have a 25 year warranty. 25 year is alright but most last up to 40 years. If you guys have any questions let me know. you must be an Ontario citizen to qualify for this.
Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? - I agree with SHri, it really depends on the target audience and how much service you really need. if you are doing National campaign than you want a firm that has the National contacts. Lots of smaller companies dont have as many resources or connections. Many firms are going to a pay for performance model which I think will do the PR and advertising industry good. no more $5000 retainers for sending out a couple of press releases - no matter how well written or targeted! if they dont get picked up, they dont get paid.
