Article Overview: Despite what almost any marketer in the world will tell you, talk is cheap. While fancy copy and great design may attract eyeballs, the best you can hope it will do is build trust. Your prospective customers can only hope your product works and your brand truly embodies all the nice sentiments it evokes. But ultimately, that's just marketing. If you want customers for keeps, you have to do it through your products. Nothing gets people over the hump to trying your products like offering free samples.

Attract New Customers With Samples
Despite what almost any marketer in the world will tell you, talk is cheap.
Samples are particularly interesting when you get smart and look at them as a return on investment compared to your other marketing efforts. Hopefully, you are tracking your marketing in some way, so you have some idea of what volume of sales you are getting in exchange for your marketing spend. If you know, for example, that you're getting one new customer for each $20 in marketing you spend, you have an excellent benchmark to compare your sample efforts against.
Samples are particularly effective if your product is effective. Now, surely not your company, but some companies do most of their sales through marketing and first time buys, not through repeat purchases. Those folks don't offer samples, and they are the sort of outfits that elicited that memorable advertising adage, "nothing kills a bad product faster than advertising."
But if your product is good, and people really like it, samples may get you much more marketing ROI than paper ads and other media. Not only will you get first time sales, but if your product truly delivers the goods, you'll have a repeat purchaser. And if you're lucky, you'll cash in on some of that viral word-spreading we all hear so much about.
