Driving Retail Foot Traffic With Coupons And Free Stuff
Since the advent of the internet and online shopping, brick and mortar retailers have continued to lose more and more customers each year. The ease, comfort and privacy of shopping from home have made internet retailers some of the largest in the world.
While the next generation of consumers chooses to stream movies and music online instead of walking the aisles of music shops and movie rental stores, businesses have desperately been fighting an uphill battle to keep the customers they have. Driving retail foot traffic with coupons and free stuff has been one successful tactic they've used to turn the tide.
Coupons are one of the most widely used marketing and promotional tools used by brands and retailers alike. Not only do they benefit the specific product or brand by raising sales, they also drive foot traffic to the brick and mortar retailer who can in turn, sell additional products to the coupon using consumer. Coupons have proven to be a wildly successful method of selling more products to both new and current customers alike. While some marketers offer minimal discounts via their coupons to simply capitalize on the name recognition and consumer experience, others offer deep discounts in an attempt to break into a new market or capture market share from a competitor. Regardless of their motives and goals, the physical retailer benefits regardless.
In addition to discounts and coupons, retailers and brands are driving additional foot traffic simply by giving away free stuff. American consumers love a bargain and you can't get more of a discount than ‘free'. Unfortunately, some promoters use the lure of a free item or a free month of service to capture a new consumer only to victimize them with over-priced future obligations. For most retailers however, a freebie promotion usually takes the form of free samples over the deli counter or free tee shirts with the brand or store's logo imprinted. Regardless of whether you're a store owner or brand manager, driving retail foot traffic with coupons and free stuff is a tried and true tactic.
