Freebie Marketing 101

Giving away freebies can be an great marketing tool as long as it is done creatively and effectively. There are a number of basic tips that will assist in this. Probably the most important thing would be on determining the actual item or service that is to be given away. The freebie should be something that will get the customer to purchase additional services or get interested in the product. For example, giving away free printer supplies will help to bolster sales of printers.

Secondly, the freebie needs to generate publicity or a certain level of buzz. Getting the customer to try a product for free should hopefully cause him to get interested and tell others about his experience. If the freebie does not get the customer to go any further, then it has failed. There needs to be follow through that happens.

The call to action for the customer should also include an offer for additional savings. This could include coupons for additional related items or services. It is usually best to offer significant savings. If this is not done, the customer will feel as if the savings are truly not worth the effort.

Finally, the cost of the giveaway and the estimated return needs to be looked at carefully. In many instances, a freebie will initially cost the business. If this is appropriately offset by increased revenue then the freebie promotion would be considered successful. The conversion factor will greatly affect the bottom line. Depending on the advertising campaign, the market, the audience and other items, this conversion rate can be quite variable. If this is not known, estimating a lower conversion is best.

Free samples and services can be a great marketing tool for any business. With a little bit of creativity, one can surely be successful.
