Getting Consumer Information With Free Samples

Companies are often surprised to learn how cheaply, and how easily, consumer information can be obtained directly from consumers. One secret: free samples.

After driving users to your company's website, using incentives such as a free sample can convert them from a one-off visit to a prospective lead. To receive their free sample, the consumer must disclose their name, home address and depending upon the nature of your sign-up form, almost any information imaginable. As long as your form avoids being too invasive, for example, asking the consumer for their work phone number, consumers will often leave valuable demographic data such as age, occupation, or how they discovered your product.

You can also try using social networks to gather consumer information. By offering free samples, either of physical products mailed to a person's address, or by offering digital content, you can encourage potential customers to "like" your product's page on Facebook or another social network.

Naturally, free samples of physical products will result in a higher quality of some data, for instance, geographic data culled from mailing addresses because without disclosing this information, the user won't receive his sample. Free digital samples are still useful, however some individuals may use false data such as fake geographical locations, ages or e-mails just to satisfy sign-up requirements. The promise of future coupons will encourage visitors to leave a current, and valid, e-mail address.

As they "like" your product, page or offer, this event will turn up in the profiles of their friends. More importantly, this allows you to collect information about your potential customers. If your promotional campaign offers an incentive for referrals, or even a simple question on the subject, you can further track the effectiveness of your social network campaign.

If users remain an engaged part of your social networking community, you can continue collecting information directly from them through polls, or even better, by engaging the consumers in conversation. Posting a question to your company's Facebook page asking what users thought of a recent product, or about their experiences with your company, can solicit rapid, honest information.

The use of free samples can help any company gather valuable insight into consumer information and demographics, so long as the company avoids invasive questioning, and engages with its market.

Re: Avon/ Amway Re: Avon/ Amway - Consumer spending behaviour dictates that during down times, consumers will be MORE apt to spending on personal hygeine and personal therapeutic items. This is why you see companies like Avon, Mary Kay, etc advertising more and finding new sales associates. Not everyone will have a job, but most people have friends to sell things too!

Simple way to avoid Cold Calling Simple way to avoid Cold Calling - Gary, A chiropractor I work with hates cold calling (me too!) and he uses a technique to warm people up to using his services - it's so simple! In Sales your dealing with 3 pools of people: 1. Strangers 2. Prospects 3. Returning Customers You need to move people from one pool to the next. We'll concentrate on #1 and #2 as it's most relevant to your question. My Clients does the following (you just have to tailor it to your situation - be creative). My Client (we'll call him Bob) Bob leverages his time and resources to only get people that need his offer (pain relief) to put their hand up. Dealing with Strangers can get expensive and they don't like to be told what to do as they have no trust or relationship built with him. So to get Strangers to put their hands up he writes up an offer with a free report on a particular pain relief - let's say lower back pain (note: he can simply just change lower back pain to neck pain and have a new report). and uses multiple marketing vehicles to promote the Free report - magazines, newspaper, forums, postcards, private clinics etc. The only people picking up this information are the very people Bob would like as customers as they have Lower back pain. Bob's Free report ends with him stating his services and includes a Free in-house Consultation with no obligation. You'd be surprised at how easily Bob converts Strangers into Prospects. Note: They become prospects when they ask for the Free Guide and in exchange provide their contact details. This gives Bob unlimited opportunity to contact them for the Free in-house consultation with no obligation to continue using him. At this stage Bob's ability to close the sale lies in his office providing good customer service, Bob's ability to help the prospect and provide value at the free in-house consultation. Notice, he hasn't had to pick up the phone to COLD-CALL his Stranger pool or his Prospect pool. Hope that example helps to increase your prospecting!
