Retail Brands Using Free Product Giveaways To Boost Fan Base

In an attempt to boost fan base, many companies offer free product giveaways to their customers. While this method not only applies to retail companies, it is very effective for them. Many small business owners send samples of their product or small items to new customers or customers who answer some kind of call to action. Though the idea of free giveaways is not new, it still remains an effective way to boost a fan base and capture information. The reasons behind the concept are psychological.

Psychology

Reciprocation is a natural tendency in humans. If someone offers you a gift, you feel compelled to give a gift in return. This same idea applies to businesses. If a business owner gives away something of value, the customer may feel compelled to return the favor. However, they may not know how to return the favor unless the business owner creates a call to action.

A call to action and freebies

Many digital retail store owners have sign-up forms available for customers to receive weekly newsletters. Your customers may not want to purchase something from your store, but they may still feel compelled to reciprocate. Asking them to sign up for your newsletter is a great way to satisfy that compulsion. Best of all, newsletters are free, so the customer does not lose anything of value by signing up.

The situation is virtually win-win because the customer receives a free item and the business owner receives valuable information for potential leads. By communicating with customers via newsletters, business owners can establish and develop ongoing relationships with customers and clients, thus improving profits and the overall success of the owner's business.

Careful planning

However, if you attempt utilizing freebies in your small business' marketing strategy, you must first carefully plan. You can potentially lose money by giving away free items if you are not actively creating different ways customers can reciprocate your actions. Therefore, you may want to start out with inexpensive items -- something that won't jeopardize your business' funds. If you notice that your free giveaways are attracting new customers and cultivating relationships with existing customers, you should consider substituting the inexpensive items for something of more value.
