Researching the right keywords certainly is one of the most important tasks to be done when properly optimising your website.

The idea behind keyword research is pretty simple actually.
You need to identify the keywords searched for by most potential buyers, which eventually haven’t been being targeted by your competitors yet. You need at least to find out which keyword or key phrase is being searched the most.
To do so, you will need a tool. The best known tool is Wordtracker.

The number of keywords you will to target will obviously depend on the size of your website. It is actually recommended that you target between one and three keywords per page only.
Once your keywords, you can then write your content or re write existing content to include more of those targeted keywords. You need to keep in mind though that you should not spam your content with the targeted keywords either and that your text need to make sense to the reader.
The best thing to do is to always keep in mind that you are writing content for a person first and then for the search engine.

Keyword research is not actually only done to find keywords when writing content for a website and can be used for other tasks.
One of then is for example link building. When doing link building, you need to find out which keyword is being searched the most and which keyword will be the easiest to get to the first page of Google. Let’s say you are a seo company and you do not know if the key phrase seo company is the best to target. Well by doing keyword research you could actually find that seo companies could be searched more often than seo company, or that seo companies is being searched less often but that there are fewer websites targeting this phrase (being found on the search engine’s results).

Another example is Pay Per Click management.
When setting up an account on Google Adwords or any other, you will need to get keywords to bid on. Doing keyword research could actually help you finding keywords you would not have thought of in the first place. And that is why keyword research is so important when doing pay per click management.

You can either do that all by yourself but it is usually better to get someone qualified to help you take the right decision.

Re: Keyword Selection - Hi All, Very interesting topic of discussion! Website success mainly depends upon the target keywords so the keywords should be relevant to website theme. Long tail keywords often rank easily in SERP. You can also use Ad word Keyword tool for keyword selection. Keyword having less competition and high monthly search volume are easy to rank.
Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategies - I'd disagree with the first point. Keyword research is important, but it should not be the complete focus when doing niche research. A niche is typically made up of thousands of keywords, and researching them all is very difficult, because the keyword tools won't tell you what most of them are. Plus a niche is not a bunch of keywords, it is a demographic interested in a particular topic. You need to learn about the people in this demographic. Keyword research tells you their search habits and gives clues to competitiveness and potential profit, but you are looking at through a very narrow window of a much bigger picture.
