Online communities are useful for SEO

An online community is a term that can be used for a variety of social groups interacting via the Internet. Some examples are, wikis which are websites that allow the visitors themselves to easily add, remove and otherwise edit and change available content, Wikipedia being the best example. Another example would a blog or chat rooms.
Social media sites such as Facebook or Digg are becoming more and more popular and their growth in the past few years has been amazing. As people love to share their thought, pictures or even articles they like, those websites becomes a new way for people to express themselves.
It is a general rule that relevant links into your website will enhance your Page Rank thus moving you up the Search Engine Rankings. It is possible to link from Internet Forums, Blogs and Wikis to your website. However, you have to consider how open the sites you are wishing to link from are to abuse, which could result in your site being blacklisted.
You will also find that different sites have different rules about linking. For example, Internet Forums may insist on you subscribing, which may incur a fee. There may also be a minimum number of postings required before you can provide a link to your site. On the other hand, you could find blogs where you can post comments without having to subscribe to anything but will not allow you to leave any anchor text link in your comment. Also, some sites may not allow links from commercial sites. All those factors will change from one place to another so keep looking and you will find what you want, as there are millions of forums, blogs and wikis that are dealing with millions of different topics.
Adding a blog to your website has a significant effect on your site optimisation due to the new content which will attract the search engine spiders.
Posting on other blogs can provide a link to your own site but be careful who you link to. Make sure the site is of high quality and relevant to your site or you could be in danger of blacklisting.
In conclusion, online communities can provide new opportunities in optimising your site but you have to exercise the same level of discernment as you would with conventional link building. Actually an SEO company will tend more and more to use this kind of SEO technique.

Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? -
I think you are referring to SEO when you say buying traffic. You're actually partly right, and I say "partly" because SEO can be either. But just to look at it as a marketing tool. Helping others be informed of the service you provide is nothing bad I guess. but some really push the limits and take advantage. Anyway, I suggest you start with looking for communities where your site and its information can be useful and join the community. It can either be social networking sites or forums like these one. Ning.com has had a lot of community sites built nowadays, and the activeness of the people is unbelievable so you might be interested in joining some. Another way would be looking for blogs that talk about similar topic and exchanging links with them. This way you're helping both of your sites and the people looking for information as well. Go to wordpress.com and just look for the right categories, or go to blog directories. That would be my suggestion.[/quote:8x0fhggu] Thanks for your suggestions. I think that communities are indeed a key point in these days regarding marketing strategies. I'll try to apply all you have suggested. Thanks

Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - [quote:31qpen1j]This is just my opinion, but I consider the prospective categories, Online Marketing, Internet Marketing and Online Promotion, as being pretty much one and the same - just different words that different people use.[/quote:31qpen1j] I completely agree! Those are all just "internet marketing" as far as I am concerned. And I normally would have voted for internet marketing, however I chose social media marketing simply because there are more than enough IM forums out there already.
Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - Hi Everyone, 2009 is a new year and I'd like to create a new forum category to jazz things up! In the past, there's been some interest voiced about adding a "Social Media Marketing", "Online Marketing", "Internet Marketing" or "Online Promotion" category. I'll implement [u:1g2tv6tf]ONE[/u:1g2tv6tf] of those new categories, but can someone first tell me what the difference would be between the existing "Marketing" section and one of those new options mentioned above? Thanks
Re: Should Evan add a "Social Media Marketing" category to the f Re: Should Evan add a "Social Media Marketing" category to the f -
Just as an update, Evan has extended the poll's expiration date and says he'd like to see at least 25 "yes" votes before implementing the new category. Moreover, it would probably be called "Online Marketing" instead of Social Media Marketing".[/quote:p78047w2] Okay - I have a request -- can the title be changed to "Online Marketing"? The reason I'm asking is because people may not know what social media marketing is , while that would make me vote for it to learn more, but not every thinks like that. Also, online marketing could capture more attention when people spot in on the list. Shri
