In the days of internet infancy, you could add 1000's of links to your site from any other websites, load up your content with a particular keyword, and Bam!- you got top rankings.
Well that’s not the case anymore, and the sheer quantity of links you have pointing to your site is no longer the primary factor.
In case you’ve missed the news, the key to good SERPS today is relevance. Your inbound links are much more valuable when they are from a good quality website that is relevant to your own site’s content. If your website is about archeology in the twenty first century, a back link from a dog food site is practically useless.
You can run a search for the primary keyword phrase for each of your website’s pages. Click the top few results and look for: “submit your site” or “link exchange” or some similar verbiage. You can also type: link:www.yoururl.com, to find links for your site. Why would your competitors want to list your URL on their webpage? Simple, they need high quality, relevant links as badly as you do! Many webmasters will agree to exchange links, but you have to ask.
While you’re checking out your competition, have a look around their website and see what links are present. Any site link listed on your competitor’s page is likely to vote for your webpage as well. It seems sneaky, but really it’s not.
Whenever possible, use good anchor text for your links internally too, on your own site. The more inbound links with relevant anchor text you have, the more likely you are to pull top SERPS ranking, and believe it or not, links on your own website can count too. It’s also a great opportunity to squeeze a few more relevant keywords onto a page.
You can always pay someone to build links for you if you find the task of obtaining links manually distasteful, but be prepared to pay for such a service. SEM companies will charge you a pretty penny to perform the time consuming task of gathering relevant links.
If you do choose a link building company, make sure they don’t use automated software to request links. This is just link spamming, and everyone hates spam. Speak directly with the company representative and make sure they understand the concept of relevance and its importance to search engine positioning.
