How links from authoritative sites raise your Google rankings.

How links from authoritative sites raise your Google rankings.

Despite persistent rumors of Google bombing (creating bad links to bring a site’s rankings down) there is no credible evidence an inbound link can harm your web site. The quality of the inbound link is more important than the quantity! In search engine optimization terms what you are seeking is the best co-citation. The best link is a link from a page of a related web site where the link to your site is used in a contextual format and all of the other outbound links on that page are related to your product and service. Thus you have strong co-citation. If there are unrelated links on the outbound page Google gets confused and associates your business with the unrelated businesses on that web page thus weakening your co-citation. This is one reason why a web site with 250 inbound links can outrank a site with 2,000 inbound links. The stronger and more consistent the co-citation the higher your rankings will be.

Co-citation is important but you also want links from authoritative sites in your industry or web sites with .edu extensions. I have a client whose business model allows him to get links directly from pages of university and community college web sites. Every time we launch a new product his new product pages jumps to the top of Google even though the new product web page is less than six weeks old. If you are able to arrange text links from these types of web sites, you will receive a quick boost (4 – 6 weeks) in your search engine rankings at Google.

In summary, in-bound links are still one of the primary components of rankings at Google (despite what many people say). I know because my client just launched a new product back in February and we were at #1 at Google for some very competitive search terms in six weeks. Not all business models allow you to have this kind of success but hopefully this article will help you understand what type of links can quickly impact your Google rankings.
