1. Make sure the text you ask other websites to link to your website uses descriptive words representing search terms you desire to have high rankings for. The words others use to link to your URL are called anchor text. For example: I prefer companies to link to my URL with words like: Search engine optimization consulting or search engine optimization training. The more related websites linking to my site using these terms, the higher my search engine rankings (SERPs) are at Google.
2. Set up a links directory, or resources directory, at your web site for complementary business services.
The web is really a vast series of interconnected links – that’s how it came to be called “the World Wide Web.” If your site has no other sites linking to it, your site is considered fairly irrelevant by Google. After all, when someone conducts a search, they are looking for the most relevant website for their needs. The job of the search engines is to provide relevant results. Asking companies who have authoritative sites to link to yours will make your site more relevant to the search engines and move you up in their search results. You can set up a links directory manually or you can go download the program “Arelis.” This program will allow you to set up a links directory on your web site and semi-automate the linking process.
3. Contact websites that have relevant content and ask them to exchange links with you. Once you have set up your links directory, you can start contacting relevant sites and ask them to link to you. I recommend linking only to sites with content that’s relevant to your web site. A good beginner’s resource for finding web sites to exchange links with is the SEO Tools section of my website at: www.internet-search-marketing.com
4. Set up reciprocal links instructions on your site.
Assume that, once you start getting more traffic from the search engines, you will have other companies contacting you to link to your site. Set up your linking instructions so these companies can efficiently contact you.
5. Add links slowly over time.
Google did not become a multi-billion-dollar company overnight, and overnight mega-success should not be your aim, either. Why not? Because (among other reasons) Google actually measures the rate at which inbound links are added to sites; if your site suddenly adds a huge number of inbound links, you might find your site banned or penalized in the rankings by Google. I suggest adding 25 links a month for niche market sites and 50-100 links a month for larger, more competitive categories.
5. If you don’t have time to manage a linking campaign pay an SEO firm to manage a linking campaign for you.
If you have a marketing budget, include a line item each month for purchasing a given quantity of links. Most legitimate search engine optimization companies will charge you about $15.00 - $25.00 per link, for industry related one way links.
Note: Generally one way theme related links are perceived as more valuable than reciprocal links.
6. Be patient while you build your links.
Don’t expect to move up instantly in the rankings at Google because you have added new links. It can take anywhere from six months to two years for you to see significant upward movement in your search rankings at Google.
In summary, arrange to have web sites that are related sources of information link to your website. As a courtesy, you should link back to those sites too. The more relevant links you build over time with descriptive anchor text, the more your Google SERPs will improve.
