Today social media trends dominate the internet

Article Overview: Are you on Facebook? Do you Tweet your friends? And how about your information on MySpace? If you have no clue regarding what you just read, you are in the minority today. You have managed to avoid the popular social media trends and have been kept out of the loop. The social thing to do now days is communicate with others on one or more of the “social networking� media commonly used. Nearly every business web site in use today has their own page or space on one or all of these sites.

How social are you?

Invitations to join up and Tweet your friends on Twitter, maybe even receive a cow for your virtual farm on Facebook, or exchange photos on MySpace are so much a part of the internet currently that it’s almost impossible not to come into contact with one or more of these social web sites. Ask your teenage son or daughter about MySpace and you will soon be brought up to date.

Part of the popularity of these social media trends is the fact people can meet up with others yet remain anonymous on the internet without the danger of meeting fact to face.

Have chat rooms been replaced by social networking sites?

Up until the past few years the popular place to meet new people or even old friends was in online chat rooms. There is a chat room for your home town, your work place, your school, your hobby, your pet, your fetish, and almost anything else that is socially relevant. Today social media trends are more sophisticated and selective. Sites like Facebook offer a way to keep in touch with others by signing on their wall. Leave messages or give them a gift of a plant or livestock (virtually of course) and they can remember you as they add them to a growing collection in their “FarmVille” section on Facebook. It’s all in fun and quite harmless.

The social networking site knows as Twitter has grown over thirteen hundred percent the past year, currently making it the fastest growing media of any type.

Among social media trends commonly in use today are:

• Email at 57.8%
• Social networking at 56.3%
• Radio at 49.7%
• Magazines at 42.1%
• Direct mail (referred to as snail mail) at 34.7
• Newspapers at 31.7%

Where television once ruled as the go to place for news and current events, it has been replaced by email and social web sites like MySpace and Facebook.

How believable is the social network information?

Real information or actual news is available through many web sites today and among the popular social media trends are up to the minute news, much of which can be selective and aimed directly to someone’s particular interests. Messages can arrive in email with exclusive info regarding any specific subject the user chooses. This makes sense because now that email is something that was requested, not merely junk mail that we all get too much of. The social side of the internet can be of benefit to us all in this global universe.

If you are dance company, music company etc etc then you simply cannot afford to ignore social media. There are several other businesses which perform well in social media promotion. You need to look whether social media will help your business or not. If you see huge pool of customers who are searching for your services on Youtube, metacafe, then surely you must jump for it.
Re: Twitter, Social Networking: What's Your method? - The bottom line: You can have thousands of friends, and it takes only a second to add one, if you don't make conversation with them, it is a useless tool, like all social media sites. I know many people who concentrate mainly on social media marketing, and they make money, but it takes time. Personally, I rather skip social media and focus on other stuff, like article marketing, and I use social media only for fun and communicate with best friends.
Get some media exposure - Hi Don, Is the new initiative cutting edge enough to get some good media coverage? It can often be hard to reach the hobbyists but they do often keep up to date with the latest trends and innovations through industry magazines. With Redasoft we received some great press coverage that helped sell our products to our market of research scientists. Magazines are also always looking for a good story and want to stay on top of developing trends. Have you considered going for some media attention?
Re: Social Media Marketing Ignorance - Has anyone read any good books on social media they'd like to share? I've been considering reading one, but wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations on an informative one. Someone earlier mentioned a lack of time. That is one reason I'm still in the dark ages as well but I realize that I may be falling behind the times by not at least considering the business case for social media against the time consumption. I'm also hesitant to use facebook and the like fearing it will turn into a platform for old friends to reconnect v. a way to grow my business. I also am unsure how much time it really takes to maintain various social media...any thoughts? Anyone made any mistakes or had any huge successes using social media for business that they'd like to share?
