Bad SEO advice

Here are just three of the often misleading and usually downright incorrect SEO ‘top tips' that commonly come to light. This bad SEO can waste time, money and hinder your business's success as well as the opportunity to enjoy proper online growth if listened to by the uninitiated. Myth number one. ‘SEO is some sort of black art - an alchemy-like blend of science, technology, inside knowledge and secret know how by mysterious SEO experts'. That's nonsense based on the age-old rip-off principle of 'the more you can confuse people the more you can charge them.' You learn successful SEO practices through experience and through training. There is no magic; there are no silver bullets. It takes a huge amount of time and application to be good at SEO, which is why people who are busy running their own businesses should turn to SEO professionals to get the job done properly.

Myth number two. ‘You can outwit the search engines' No, you can't. Play to the rules and play safe. You may enjoy a small short-term advantage with a ‘black hat' trick or two but you'll be quickly found out by the search engine ‘bots and probably penalised. There are shades of grey that experienced SEO consultants will be happy to apply as long as they fit in with the context of the site and as long as it doesn't break search engine ‘rules'. However, as a rule it's unwise to think that you can fool the mighty search engines like Google with less than salubrious techniques. They're wise to every trick in the book. As well as making the search engines turn their noses up, it can also discourage your human visitors and potential customers if they see clunky, old-fashioned SEO tricks on your site. A homepage stuffed with keywords the same colour as your background simply screams ‘amateur.'

Myth number three. ‘Your keyword research will reveal the 'golden keywords' and you should only use these.' Well, no, not really. Keyword research is vital to SEO. It produces well-selected keywords that reveal your target audience and really allow you start focusing on the most responsive, convertible visitors. A mistake that many organisations make is that they only stick with a few 'golden keywords'. Don't over look the benefits of a wider reach by applying many more related words (often at far less expense PPC wise). Think laterally for great value SEO that will open up previously unimaginable audiences to your products and services.
