Google Caffeine wants a relevant web
Based on the success of initial trials and user feedback, Google's re-write of its indexing system code named Caffeine is set to be rolled out to a larger audience any time now. Whilst operating in the background and largely out of view from day to day Google users the update is considered as significant. Matt Cutts, Google's king of search, compares the enhancements to the Big Daddy update in 2005.
In a continuation of the previous post that looks at the increased importance of page load speed in the new Google Caffeine search algorithm, it's worth examining what other aspects of the new search format might affect user experience and influence search engine optimisation techniques.
For example - How will Caffeine impact upon search value accuracy?
Search Accuracy - the Holy Grail of SEO and search in general. After all, if you can match your user requirements with what you are able to deliver in terms of search results, you are not only delivering them great value but you are delivering your own organisation a significant competitive advantage.
The big question though is how to accurately identify what your users want. Often the best and simplest way is to analyse site content (primarily text on a site), rationalise themes and return appropriate pages against search strings. It would seem that Caffeine is taking a wider, broader more intelligent approach in identifying relevance than traditional keyword relevance.
Rather than simply focusing on one or two keywords and very tight, specific semantics in order to recognise appropriate returns Caffeine will review and analyse larger amounts of text, keyword strings and take into account a broader richer range of related language - synonyms, similes and folksonomy as some search experts refer to it.
Caffeine's more robust indexing and the foundations that it is laying for more semantically focused, intelligent and relevant search returns means that genuine, themed, high quality content is more important than ever.
Win your search wars with great content.
By making your content original, well written and well presented you not only make your website user friendly you make it Caffeine friendly. Talk to your SEO team about the opportunities that the Caffeine update offers your website and what you can do to take advantage of it.
