How NOT to SEO your site

Sometimes you can try too hard. You so desperately want to succeed that in covering every angle, turning over every stone or going that extra mile you've inadvertently pushed it too far. You've crossed that invisible line between ambitious and desperate, and in the process undermined your efforts. Desperate is a turn off - to prospective clients, would be employers, tall, dark and handsome Venezuelans and especially to Google. It's not that you have tried to bend the rules to breaking point or been a little sneaky that things fall apart. It's because you kind of care too much.

There's nothing wrong with wanting top search placements. It's only natural that you want to scoop up all that delicious traffic and convert it onto online profits. Even better, you can do that at the expense of the competition - a splendid win win. The trick though is to conceal your drive. To play it down.

The school of SEO cool says:

Don't rush out and buy links

Two reasons. The first is that Google hates, absolutely hates, the concept of link juice being bought as opposed to earned. Links are the defining signal that Google uses to evaluate the relevance and worth of a site. They're endorsements of quality from other sites that Google regards as votes of confidence. Thousands of incoming links from low grade sites screams 'gaming'. It's unnatural and you will suffer the search positioning consequences sooner or later.

The second reason that you shouldn't buy links is that it distracts you from the important job in hand. From concentrating your efforts on earning genuine, high quality links by building your web presence on great content and healthy happy relationships with other sites in your neighbourhood. For example links from editorials or reviews on reputable sites are incredibly powerful endorsements.

Keyword abuse

Trying to cram as many keywords as possible into your title tags, your description tags, your header tags, your internal link anchor text and your body copy, isn't advised. Again, it simply isn't natural. Neither users nor search engines find this attractive. Both will penalise you - users by bouncing and not linking to you and engines by sinking your site down the rankings.

In reality, especially in the more competitive marketplaces, we're talking fine lines though the fundamental advice is - be good and be natural to be popular.

Re: Google Custom Search: Let Visitors Search YOUR Site Only Re: Google Custom Search: Let Visitors Search YOUR Site Only - Hi William, Yes, a clear layout or site architecture, menu bars and site map all help visitors to navigate your site. They are like the CONTENTS pages of a book. A custom search tool is more like the INDEX, except that it is the reader and not the writer or publisher who enters the search terms. If you have an extensive site, a toolbar is a great way to allow the site visitor swiftly to discover whether or not your site has what he is looking for.
Re: Traffic! How do you get it? Re: Traffic! How do you get it? - I also wonder if the type of site you are using could play a factor with traffic. For example my business site I have been working on for a year now, has about 700 backlinks. I rank on page one for my site keywords, have numerous blog posts, articles you name it I have done it. It runs on a standard html format config. My new fishing site, which runs on Worpress gets triple the traffic that my business site does with a lot less effort. I know PR doesn't really mean much but my fishing site skipped right passed PR1 and went to a two while my business site took about 10 months to get a 2. Just a thought, but it has started me thinking. Tim.
Choosing a Name Choosing a Name - One big advantage is that we're linking the site to my partner's existing site which is currently getting over 3 million hits a year. She asked if I wanted to start a whole new site or if I wanted to incorporate it into her site -- that was an easy one. Shri
Re: Yes, Big Brother IS watching you Re: Yes, Big Brother IS watching you - Yeah, I know what you mean GT. I had a similar experience recently after I was browsing around a diamond engagement ring site... Later that day I went to one of my own sites and the ads showing on it were all of the sudden for diamond rings. I had never seen those ads before on my own site or any other site, and they didn't have anything to do with the content of my site, so there was no reason for them to be there. I continued seeing those same ads on my site (and others) for several days afterward. Now I have not seen them since. And I know for a fact that I wasn't logged into my Google account or any other account that would make them show personalized results or whatever. I always log out of everything and/or close out of all sites when I am finished on them. So this was very strange! You are right big brother is watching!
