SEO Techniques

There are two types of search engine optimisation:

1) On-page Optimisation
2) Off-page Optimisation

On-page Optimisation

On-page optimisation is the process of structuring or changing the elements on your webpage so that it can be found by search engines for specific keywords. The on-page elements or factors that you need to change in order to improve your website's positions in search engines include title Tag, header tags, page content, alt tag, meta description tag and meta keywords tag.

Keywords
Keywords and phrases strategically placed on your website can significantly boost your ratings in search engine results. It's important to communicate on your website using the terminology that your visitors use. If you use the right terminology and phrases, they will find you.

When selecting keywords for your site, Don't start off with highly popular keywords because these keywords are used in fierce competition and it can take several years for your website to rank top in search engines.

Off-page Optimisation

In search engine optimisation, "off page" factors have become more and more important as they relate to rankings. In particular, solid link popularity can literally make or break a site with the search engines.

Off-page optimisation concentrates on increasing the number of backlinks. Backlinks or inbound links mean the links to your website from other websites. The more websites linking to your site, the higher your website's positions will be. There are actually two types of backlinks:

• One-way link - A relevant website links to your webpage without requiring a link back from you

• Reciprocal link - The owner of a relevant website agree to place a link to your website and in exchange you provide a link back to the owner.

Search engines weight more heavily on one-way links than reciprocal links.

Other important off-page factors you need to pay attention are:

1) Anchor text used in the link pointing to your website.
2) The Google page rank (PR) of the website linking to you.

Anchor Text
When you exchange link with another site, you will need to provide your website's title that will be placed on the link exchange partner's website. The website's title will be a clickable link to your website and the clickable link is called anchor text. You anchor text should contain your targeted keyword.

Google Page Rank (PR)
You can see the Google page rank of a website using Google toolbar. Here's the link to download and install Google toolbar.

Page rank shouldn't be ignored when building backlinks. The more high page rank relevant websites (websites that have content related yours) linking to you the faster your website will reach top ranking in Google.

In order to rank high, you need to build as many backlinks as possible. But don't grow your backlinks too fast as Google may de-index your website for this reason. There are no specified guidelines by Google of how many inbound links you can build daily.

Re: Bad SEO techniques? Re: Bad SEO techniques? - There are few more techniques which also known as the Bad SEO Techniques or Black Hat SEO Techniques. Such as: - Relying on keyword metatags - Purchase Links (From Spamming or blacklisted sites or doing purchase links on high level for site marketing) - Horde Page Rank: This is one of my favorites, because it's one that most webmasters don't understand yet. This is because it changed over the past year or two. The concept people have in their mind is that page rank is a key part of site rankings and linking to other sites "leaks page rank" from your site. However, the world has changed. - Swap Links: Another oldie, but not goodie. Search engines want links to represent endorsements. Swapped links represent barter, and they are trivial to detect. Don't swap links for the purpose of building page rank. It's a waste of your time - Implement duplicate content - Use Session IDs on your URLs - Use lots of Javascript - Implement your site in Flash

I have one question, though. How would one implement Session IDs for a URL, and what benefit would come from doing so?

The search engines don't pay much attention to keyword metatags, and using javascript/flash just means the search engines can't "read" it (so if your menu is javascript, for instance, the search engine won't see any keywords you might have in there.)

If you can arrange for the form method to be POST, this particular problem does not arise. Data-transmission paths to the host differ between GET and POST. The latter, as well as being somewhat more secure, completely sidesteps the issue of fake URLs and SE confusion.
Re: SEO... Re: SEO... - [quote="tumescentliposuction":1wl7yf0v] Getting a high SERP is a combination of a number of things. Leaving out any of the items on the following list of SEO Techniques can result in your page not getting as high a search engine results position as it could.[/quote:1wl7yf0v] Is there a list of SEO techniques that was supposed to follow this post? If so please post it so that we can comment. Cheers Phil
