SEOcial Media – it's getting BIG

There are so many winners at the moment; you might wonder who the losers actually are. Maybe losing's stopped, doesn't exist any more, phased out. Maybe it's just considered a little analogue, a bit September 10th, Web 1, Cambrian.

Everywhere you look things are going through the roof. No sooner does Bing release figures showing that its usage since the 'decision engine' marketing campaign hit the television screens has leapt 22% (22% of a pretty small number to be fair), or that Beckham powered Yahoo took an extra 7% of the search market in June, than Facebook is announcing it's 500 millionth user - HI 5s to Lincoln Mybo of Flickut. Not wanting to be left out of the fun, Apple then show up with fiscal Q3 revenues of $15.7 billion and a net profit of $3.25 billion. Spotify shout "500,000 Premium subscribers" across the room.

Perhaps the most interesting mega digit announced over the last week or two was the fact that, according to Biz Stone, Twitter now serves more than 800 million search queries every day. Not only is Twitter a social media platform, but it has also turned into the world's fastest growing search engine, speeding past both Yahoo! and Bing in the process.

Google is still way out in front when it comes to searches, with a lip-smacking 88 billion search queries per month. However, the rapid rise of Twitter shouldn't be ignored. The message is clear. Search and social media are fast becoming integrated marketing mediums. The fact that the major search engines now all factor in social media signals into their algorithms tells its own story. They've realised that Twitter has stolen a march and rather than fight, they have embraced the new social sources of relevance to boost their own search potency.

You should too. Follow the path set by the big Internet players and build social into your online profile both as a route to bigger and better placements, but also as an end in its own right. Think of social media as a component of your SEO, much in the same way as you do of optimised website design, coding, tags and lots of lovely fresh, highly quality content.

But I agree with the rest that the 10 recent post is nice. Maybe we should open up a new section in the forums on Social Media...or Social Media Marketing. I will tell you that the world is about 1 1/2 behind when it comes to understanding social media. Building a section now will put EvanCarmichael.com is a great position a year down the road when people realize Social Media can produce more traffic than SEO. Jeff

Re: UPDATES: New Campaign! New Layout! New Ideas! Re: UPDATES: New Campaign! New Layout! New Ideas! - GT - thanks for the FYI - I'm not sure if we'll put a link back. Something to consider though! Trent - the new category is "Social Network and Media" which was put in to compliment the Online Businesses category that currently exists. Overall the new categories are: - Looking For, Networking and Events - Review My... - Social Network and Media - Brags and Rants These came as a result of Ringo doing research on other forums and thinking about what could be improved on ours to give a better experience for everyone. I hope you enjoy them! David, I'm looking forward to reading your Brag / Rant!
Re: Social Media Marketing Ignorance Re: Social Media Marketing Ignorance - [quote="vbn411":7qciluxl]Social Media is space that you have to be in to succeed in our current climate. People are going to be discussing your brand / product whether you like it or not, so you might as well join the conversation and add value. [/quote:7qciluxl] I think that's probably one of the most realistic way to think about it. There's no real textbook way of understanding Social Media, it's the networks of people and their interactions that will exist with or without your input. As for Jennifer, You can always have 2 Facebook pages. Many people do. There is also LinkedIn, which is like a professional networking version of Facebook. The only way to know is to try it.
