Strong SEO means style AND substance

The Internet is largely a visual medium. Aside from using the net to listen to music or connect with others using Skype or other VOIP systems we mainly go online to watch video and films, share photos, read blogs, email, shop and the rest. The eyes have it.

You would be forgiven for thinking that just because the Internet is so visual that graphics and pictures should take absolute priority when it comes to content and successful SEO.

Well, yes. And no.

Many companies fall into the trap that great images are the be all and end all, not just a component of strategy. They make the mistake of building their websites on little more than graphics. Unfortunately, sites that might look great in the eyes of a visitor but don't actually say anything using text will fail. Not aesthetically but from an SEO point of view.

SEO Fail

We've all seen beautiful photography sites, travel sites, design sites, web sites for interior decorations companies or home furnishing companies adorned with the most beautiful images.

It's often images, through their raw power and their ability to elicit a strong emotional response, that can close a deal instantly - convince, compel or persuade. In both traditional print media and online an image can steal the show. People LOVE images - there are 4 billion photos on Flickr alone with another 5,500 uploaded every minute.

Wouldn't it be a shame though if, however amazing your images, only a handful of people ever got to enjoy them? Unfortunately for websites that are too image or graphic focused this is a very real danger.

The danger of images

Why? Because search engine spiders live to index, to manage and to sort information based on text. They use this indexed data to assess relevance and generate their search returns. Unfortunately spiders don't appreciate the beauty of a sunset or the humour of a permed cat - it's in their nature. Unless you feed them text-based data to sort, sift and assess you barely exist and all great images lose their value.

Re: Does your font matter? Re: Does your font matter? - I would say a webmaster should use a font that is easy to read and doesn't strain the eyes. There's plenty out there that won't. If it fits the style of your site, then go for it. I would have to agree with you, GT, that eccentric font should be used for offline marketing materials if the purpose is to build their brand with the font style. Many companies do this, but if you visit their website you won't see that same font style used for the content of the site. Probably a good thing.
Re: Do Articles For Businesswomen need to be written differently Re: Do Articles For Businesswomen need to be written differently - I don't think that as a general rule an article [i:11csddi3]needs[/i:11csddi3] to be written "for women." In my opinion, the two important writing rules are: 1) Write for your targeted audience. If it happens to be predominantly women or predominantly men, then write accordingly (if you have the ability to make that distinction in your writing). 2) Write in your own voice. Be natural. If you are a serious writer, your style will become apparent over time and you will develop a following. It may happen that your style is more attractive to one sex or the other. If so, you may be able to advance your writing career by further cultivating your sensitivity within that style. Bottom line: I do believe that certain styles appeal to women, certain styles appeal to men and if you know the distinction, have the ability to write in a particular style and choose to target one sex or the other, then go for it. But I don't think that it is a necessity in today's market. GT :-]
Re: help wanted in u.k. Re: help wanted in u.k. - Hi Brendan, Good to hear your progress. I checked the previous negative comment that you mentioned, but I didn't reply. There was really no substance to it, it just seemed petty and - negative! These people usually show themselves up and you must just keep on punching straight through them.
Re: Will Politics Help Or Harm Your Business? Re: Will Politics Help Or Harm Your Business? -
I'm listening to Rush Limbaugh even as I type, and he's aired some soundbytes from last night, a couple of people on the Charlie Rose show, talking about how little is known about Obama, how he's a "personality cult' , for example apparently when he gave his acceptance speech he was on stage all alone - no Joe Biden (locked in a bar somewhere, Rose speculated) no family. First time that had ever happened. I can't remember all of what they said, but they were talking about a man who has just been elected President and they "don't know anything about him." They don't know what books he's read, they don't know his plans... all they know are his speeches where he talks about "Change" and "Yes we can." without giving specifics. [/quote:c6d55zsv] I've been saying for months that the American people don't know squat about Obama - how do people elect someone to have that kind of power without knowing anything of substance about them? Sure he gives pretty speeches - but when he doesn't have a teleprompter - his words are bizarre and frightening. Fascinating how that substance has been squashed and hidden for almost two years while he was in the public eye - with rose colored glasses, but all over the news. His first press conference is about to start - would love to hear his real thoughts without a prepared speech. At least this TV appearance won't cost his supporters millions - well, not for the air time anyway. Shri
Re: Validation issues Re: Validation issues -
Here is the first error: 1 Error Line 50 column 45: there is no attribute "BORDERCOLOR" <TABLE ALIGN="centre" border="1" bordercolor=(red quote mark with 4 red dots under it)#0066600" width="584" [/quote:3805zxix] Hi Christine You will need to create a style sheet file for all of the table attributes, such as border color, border width and width of the actual table. E.g. <style type="text/css"> table.sample { border-width: 1px; border-spacing: ; border-style: ridge; border-color: black; border-collapse: separate; background-color: #fffff0; } table.sample th { border-width: 1px; padding: 1px; border-style: inset; border-color: gray; background-color: white; -moz-border-radius: ; } table.sample td { border-width: 1px; padding: 1px; border-style: inset; border-color: gray; background-color: white; -moz-border-radius: ; } </style> <table class="sample"> <tr> <th>Header</th> <td>Content</td> </tr> </table> Don't stress over this too much, it can help you in search engines against other websites but it won't automatically give you special powers in the search engines.
