Strong website structure – the basis of successful SEO

Is your website structured properly? We're not really talking graphical web design or WYSIWYG web development here. We're talking structure; the way your website hangs together technically. Its usability, its hierarchy, the user experience and information architecture of your site. The simple essence of strong website structure is ‘findability'. Does your website adhere to this basic principle or do you still expect search ‘bots and visitors to jump through hoops to get to your killer content? Note this: they won't. Chances are that any obstacles you place either knowingly or unknowingly will be met with a simple shrug of the shoulders and a quick bounce. Here's a rhetorical question for you. What's the point in having your site play host to tons of great content if it can't be found?

Good website structure means happy humans, satisfied spiders and much stronger SEO. Don't build your house on sand.

Here are some of the most important aspects of successful web structure.

Hierarchy

However broad and deep your Internet offering is, try to make sure that pages are never further than a few rational clicks away. Use keyword research to help define the relationships and relevance between your pages logically by category, by type, or by group. Whatever makes hierarchical sense. Know clearly where you are going and how you will get there. Make sure too that you know what your particular users are looking for, what they are expecting hierarchy-wise. If there are conventions or standards that apply to your business sector, then it's best to stick with them.

URL structure

Web page URLs are an important aspect of SEO nowadays. Make them informative and relevant. Google likes websites with keywords present in the URL, and so do web users. Make URLs that are logical and reflect the structure of your site.

Sitemaps

Spiders love XML site maps and will happily route through them indexing all that lovely content. Static site maps and a nice list of navigational links will easily guide your visitors around.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs offer a visual way of following your path through the site hierarchy. Google likes them too and will reward your search positioning.

Page Relevance

Semantic relationships between on-page content components are increasingly important as engines attempt to identify relevance through semantic proximity. Put simply, group related content though your website structure to reinforce relevance. It sounds like the sort of logical thing you would do anyway - footballs next to football boots next to football kits.

But it's surprising how something so obvious can be overlooked so easily. Getting it right from the get go will save you much gnashing of teeth in the future.

Think like an Association Think like an Association - Hey Sebastian, Maybe you could try thinking like an Association... I would study the structure or formats used by other Associations. What are they doing to add value for their members? The BBB plays a monitoring role for consumers by gathering data about business' that are behaving badly. And they're pretty successful at it too. Maybe you can offer a 'Platinum Program' that franchisors buy into. Accredited members only. Criteria could be strict: 1. Age (stability): 10+ years 2. Satisfied franchisees: 85% + satisfaction 3. Size (stability again): 250 units 4. Strong profits 5. Great management -Maybe a 'Gold Program' for those Franchisors that aren't quite at that level, but can strive to reach it... -Top 100, 500, 1000 Listing for qualified members... maybe a slap at Entrepreneur.com and their biased top 10 lists... -Maybe act as a monitor like BBB? -Maybe team up with FranSurvey OR do something similar for each member (not sure about Fransurvey's rep, but I like the concept) There's so much discontent within the franchising arena that I think if you were part of the solution, then you could create a win/win with your Association. The only downside is that this power can get abused if there aren't good checks and balances within the association.
Re: Top Banner Help Re: Top Banner Help - Kevin, You should use the same color the forum have and a similar structure. By the structure I think you should consider the Box structure like on the forum, it looks more organized. and can be very easily accomplished with some html, css and php. A good example of structure is the CNN website. For instance the Random Entrepreneur box on the home page disconnects you from the rest of the site. It's too tall, that content could easily fit on a 280x300 side box (just an example). The content background should be white or a lighter color. If not possible, the page "/EvanAbout.html" has a much better layout and colors combination. BTW, I just found a couple glitches that show on firefox (19% of internet users): 1)the homepage links when roll over go completely blue, I would set the "a" color on rollover to #ffffff to fix that. 2)the forum the side box TDs are using the HTML property "background", making the background repeat itself. you should probably use the CSS bg property with the no-repeat attribute.
Request for Feedback on my website for technology Startups Request for Feedback on my website for technology Startups - I have a website that I launched that caters to technology entrepreneurs. I offer a few key services to their business: 1) I refer them to service providers who can make their business more successful 2) I write articles and help use social media to generate reach for their business 3) I provide a directory of how-to articles on a number of entrepreneurship topics I am in the process of finding a Joomla plugin to create an onsite directory for the businesses I have worked with. Can anyone give me feedback on the structure of the site? Thank you it's much appreciated.
Re: Working With Traffic Exchanges Re: Working With Traffic Exchanges - Hi David, Every day I learn something new. This is fantastic. Has anyone tried it out? I am sure you like to hear from some other contributors. According to you that works. There are so many, that it gets overwhelmingly difficult to keep it up. I have subscribed, but little result. We all know about Squeeze page, but some of us are not able put it together effectively. Also the tracking code is essential to measure it. Yet again it shows that NOTHING happens without Work, even on the wonderful, inspiring Internet. We need to learn on a ongoing basis about Adwords too. Which one to choose to be effective. Without a good structure, system and skill we are meandering around the internet, looking for the day of growing success. Thanks for this post.
