The art of targeting your audience
SEO, some experts say, is all about addressing your target audience head on. Meeting them on their terms, in their time, using language they understand and gift wrapping exceptional products and services that they truly value and appreciate. Simple really. It's hard to know what all the SEO fuss is about.
The thing is.... Who are these people? What are their terms, exactly? When is their time, what language do they speak and what in their heart of hearts is it that they really value and appreciate enough to get them reaching for the plastic, or the phone or whatever it is you are trying to persuade them to do?
The mystery target audience. How can you define them? How can you identify them so that you can develop your SEO strategy and content just for them?
The first thing to consider is that business these days is increasingly built on niches. They don't necessarily have to be small niches, but if you're going to go out there and try to please everyone, your web presence will fall flat on its ASP. You need to be specific about who you want to engage. The tighter, the more defined your target audience the more punch your marketing pound will have. Realise too that focusing enables you to compete with much bigger companies and have access to a cut of their web revenue too.
Get the blade out, sharpen your pencil and strike surgically. Don't target people who like pets in the UK. Target 'cat owners aged between 20 and 50 living in the North East'. Don't aim at 'small business owners', but rather target ‘online marketing companies with more than five employees who white label SEO'. Don't think by doing this you're excluding potential customers. You can have as many niche markets as you care for.
Use this clear focus as your starting point but continue to probe.
Identify common characteristics amongst your existing customers. Where are the threads? Where is the theme? Dig deep into your customer psyche. Get into their heads, walk a mile in their shoes - anywhere that will help identify what truly motivates them.
Look at your competition. Who are they targeting and how? Are you missing a trick? Are they?
Research, research, research - where do these people congregate online? How do they communicate?
It's not easy. In fact it's tough. Maybe that's why this vital part of SEO is so often overlooked. Get it right though and your website and your online presence will be built on solid and profitable foundations. You'll be off to a flyer.
