Web design and SEO the Jacob Nielsen way – part 2
In the first part of 'Web design and SEO the Jacob Nielsen way' we looked at four classic pieces of web design and usability advice from design guru Jacob Nielsen.
• Bad Search
• PDF Files for Online Reading
• Not Changing the Colour of Visited Links
• Non-Scannable text
Let's look at the remaining six of Nielsen's top 10 web design and SEO blunders.
Fixed Font Size
Nielsen advises that web designers 'respect the user's preferences' and enable them to resize text as necessary.
Page Titles With Low Search Engine Visibility
This is a biggie. Page titles are vitally important when it comes to SEO flagging up the topicality of each page to the search engines as well as offering a clear indication to readers of the nature of the content.
As Nielsen explains:" The page title is contained within the HTML
Anything That Looks Like an Advertisement
People tend to ignore anything that looks like an ad. Maybe your ad like design element isn't an ad at all but it's unlikely that a user will ever give it the attention to find out.
Users have developed what Nielsen refers to as:
• banner blindness
• animation avoidance
• pop-up purges
Violating Design Conventions
Consistency is the name of the game. The more you can meet expectations and not confound them the better the user experience and the more successful your site is likely to be.
Jakob's Law of the Web User Experience states that "users spend most of their time on other websites."
They form their expectations of your site based on experiences elsewhere. If you confuse them, your site will be harder to use and users won't hang around.
Opening New Browser Windows
This is a rule that I certainly agree with, however not if Nielsen is referring to new tabs as opposed to windows. He says that opening up new browser windows pollutes users screens. Fair enough. But with the advent of tabbed browsing many users now run multiple web sites from with the same browser window.
Not Answering Users' Questions
Web users are 'goal driven'. They visit websites for specific information and for specific reasons. Give them what they want and your website will succeed. If you send them around the houses to get what they want or fail to deliver it at all they will leave. Don't waste their time. Cut to the chase.
The cardinal sin in Nielsen's eyes is the failure to list prices, especially on B2B sites.
