What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search Engine Optimisation is the process of enhancing a website’s content and linking structure to maximise the website visibility in major search engines. After a web site has been optimised, it will have a far higher probability of returning pages in the top positions of the top search engines for the site’s chosen keywords.
This enhanced visibility can lead to much greater traffic and therefore is ideal for maximising the number of leads generated which, for you, will increase website sales. SEO can be regarded as a subset of SEM, Search Engine Marketing.

Top 10 Tips
1. Stick with an established domain, do not buy multiple domains
2. Optimise for your audience, not search engines
3. Research target terms extensively (great free tool www.goodkeywords.com)
4. Design your site with target terms in mind
5. Build a search engine friendly site
6. Use descriptive links (DO NOT USE CLICK HERE!)
7. Create a Google sitemap. Add it to your Google Webmaster Tools
8. Incorporate target terms into your title tags (Each page can have a unique title)
9. Ensure your site is link-worthy (this is good for link exchange)
10. Don’t fixate on ranking for one particular keyword/phrase

What Do You Want To Be Taught? What Do You Want To Be Taught? - Hi, My name is Jeff Foster, I will be moderating this new section. I want to get your opinion on topics you would like to discuss & be taught on. I see a great need for small business owners to learn how to perform basic Search Engine Marketing (SEM) which would include the basics about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). What do you want to be taught on? Jeff
Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? - You could promote your website by increasing traffic. But how do you increase traffic? Some pros uses pay per clicks to get traffic and added revenue. Others would update regularly and post useful tips that are related to what your site is promoting. Others would join blogging networks such as MySpace and even Twitter. On the other hand people use SEO or Search Engine Optimisation. You can also try interacting with sites relevant to yours through commenting appropriately at their posts and even joining discussions. Some would send their sites to directories. If you want you can also Meta tag your keywords. Try offline promotion too. You can use brochures, flyers or even advertise it on newspapers.

Re: Which is the best for beginners? Re: Which is the best for beginners? - Hi Apu, It sounds like you already have an interest in setting up your own site and this is a good way to get into affiliate marketing. You can promote products or services with links or banners from your own site or just promote other people's websites, if it is the latter then you don't need a site of your own at all. The two main expenses you can’t really get away from are the cost of choosing your domain name and website hosting fees, neither of which are greatly expensive but that is a must with your own site. Then of course you have to generate traffic to your site and this takes time and consistent effort which is where a lot of people give up because it doesn’t happen overnight. I’m not sure how familiar you are with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) of your site or how comfortable you are with article writing but these are the two ‘biggies’ when you are starting off. With articles, you can promote a service or product you are familiar with and post your original article to directories and on your own site and over time you will start to get traffic but it is very easy to get overwhelmed with all the info at the beginning so I would advise you to keep things simple, become proficient with one thing at a time then move on but keep busy and keep supplying fresh content for your site. regards, Mal.
