What lurks beneath the surface of web design?

There's so much more to successful web design than first meets the eye. Under the bonnet are the countless critical components of success. These components are often out of sight and therefore out of mind to many business owners. That is of course until you notice that things aren't quite happening as you expected, that your site isn't enjoying the numbers of visitors you wanted and that those visitors aren't in fact turning into the hoards of happy high spending customers that you had foreseen. It's only then, when time has passed, money been spent and high hopes dashed that businesses start to really look beyond the aesthetic, the imagery and the funky graphics to discover the hidden aspects of web design that make or break online success. Don't fall into this trap; don't be seduced by the bright lights, the chic and sheen of a new site design. Get things right from the off by understanding that to achieve anything approaching a sustainable and profitable online presence your site needs to enjoy good search engine placement on the sorts of search terms that your potential customers are using. It's your SEO (search engine optimisation) that will define your success. It's not pretty pictures, snazzy fonts or cool Flash intros that win you business. If you want to win online, you need to be found - the only way you can achieve this is through cool, calm and collected SEO.

Your site design and SEO strategy needs to simultaneously address both the search engine's requirements and your prospective human audience needs. It should include plenty of fresh, informative content on-site and distributed webwide to stimulate inbound links. Your copy should guide, advise, entertain and persuade. It even needs to extend to your tags in the form of well-conceived page titles, descriptions and anchor text.

It goes without saying that you want you web site design to look good and to 'feel' good - all first impressions count. As a 24/7 representation of your company it's important that people get the right impression. It would be foolish to completely ignore the aesthetic. Alongside the aesthetics, though, it's vital that you are putting the pieces in place to build ongoing, online profits.

Any professional web design company will be fully aware of the need to integrate fundamental SEO into their work and will place a premium on quality content. The more importance they place on raising profile, the more inclined you should be to use them. Ask them.

Re: Best Pen - maybe Re: Best Pen - maybe - [quote:34puc30b] You know Andy, maybe you could improve on the idea and make it work with any paper or surface. Shri[/quote:34puc30b] Shri, I don't I have the mental ability to carry that out but I'll send in some feedback to the company and i'm sure they'll add it to their list of "it'd be great if it worked on any writing surface" the reason I thought it did work on any surface is beacause of the Advertising where they have a high school guy writing on a clear glass surface - I believe this is a flash video on the link I provided above and the animation that shows up right away. Misleading - huh!
Re: Review My: e-product sales letter Re: Review My: e-product sales letter - Hi Evan, It looks great! I'd but it beneath the first Paypal button and let the PS do the work beneath the bottom Paypal button. A couple of points on the wording: 1. The headline "This-better-work..." seems to start out as if the customer is speaking and end up as if you are speaking. Do you see what I mean? 2. Replace "it" with "them" (ebook and bonuses). Cheers! David H
Best Pen - maybe Best Pen - maybe - Fly Paper! interesting... I thought it would work on any surface - that would have been best. Imagine yourself in a cafe and you pull out the best writing surface available - a napkin. You're writing your ideas in ink but it's also captured on your pen! i could have only wished...
Re: artist/author/personalized human potential developer Re: artist/author/personalized human potential developer - Hi Nancy, I know what you mean about some of those "other" forums. While we too are constantly fighting blatant spam (such as has been splattered over the site today), where people have something to of value to offer they are welcomed to the forum. It was that friendly quality which attracted me to come back to the forum after my first post. I really noticed the difference. BTW, if you'd like to upload an avatar pic and post your website link as a signature file, the way to do it is: 1. Find the blue bar going across the main forum site near the top, just beneath the black "meet your moerators" block. 2. Click "User Control Panel". 3. Click "Profile" tab. 4. From here you can "edit avatar" and also "edit signature" so be sure to put your website address and a little blurb in the signature section so that your link appears beneath your posts. Best wishes, David H
Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips - You can get away with poor design if you have killer content. There's no doubt about it. But, I think at some point you should focus on the design aspect as well. As I said earlier, it can only enhance your blog. I feel there should be a good balance between the content and design.
