Back in the old days of SEO, the web was a lot less spammy and not so commercial. Webmasters would tend to create websites with more passion and link spamming was almost unheard of. Search engines rely on old & unique content, but it is possible for new websites to outrank the old. To achieve this, the new site would have to be remarkable and add more value, such as more in depth coverage and more interactive content. Google would see these factors as something to make their search service more successful.
