Link building is the most important aspect of a search engine optimization campaign.

What is a great way to build links?

Write a quality article that will naturally attract webmasters to link to it.

While fresh content is excellent for helping you rank high, quality content will bring you the sustained, long term rankings. Let’s say you decide to start writing a blog because you would like Google to see that your site constantly adds new and original content. Great, you’re ranking high now! But each one of those blog posts will eventually get lost in the depths of your site as time goes by. And whenever you decide to stop Blogging, you’ll lose the ranking. Now let’s imagine that you create a unique, original article that is actually useful to people. At first this article won’t be any more useful than your typical blog post. But, as time goes by, people start to spread the word about your unique article. Webmasters start linking to it, people start book marking it, and the article starts to gain ranking. You can imagine where I’m going with this. Quality content will never get lost in your site. It may even become the best ranking page on your entire site. Not only will this help you rank well in search engines, but it will drive targeted traffic, help increase your overall reputation & brand name recognition, and ultimately bring you sales.

The idea is to create a useful, interesting, or fun article that will be referenced and linked to by webmasters all over the world. Imagine what your customers want to know or what you wanted to know when you first got into the industry. Share your knowledge and you will be rewarded ten fold. Here are some ideas for creating articles that may attract links and traffic.

1. Industry secrets. Is there something that you’ve learned that many outside of the industry don’t know about?

2. Collaborative articles or studies. Gather useful information from your contacts or customers within the industry and let everyone know about your findings.

3. Top ten lists. Everyone loves a top ten list, just try to make it unique and useful. Or at least extremely funny.

4. History Of. Write an article that covers the history of your industry or some aspect of your industry.

5. Bibliography. Is there anyone famous within your industry? Write a bio of that person.

6. Interviews. Interview a leading expert within your field and post it in an article.

7. How-to. A “how-to” article can be extremely successful in obtaining links and traffic. These will also go a long way to prove that you are an expert on a certain topic.

8. Industry humor. Everyone needs to take a break and get a laugh once in a while. Maybe you can help.

9. Reviews. Write a review of an event or breaking news.

10. Reveal trends. If you can spot a trend early, write about it and you may be recognized. Even predicting a trend can be good. Just be sure to let everyone know that it is a prediction, so they won’t take your word as gospel and blame you if it doesn’t come to fruition.

11. Expert advice. Share your expertise on a specific topic.

No matter what you decide to write, try to be sure that no one else has written something similar already. You want to be the reference or industry standard when it comes to the article you decide to write. If someone else has already written about your topic and it’s well referenced throughout the web, you’ll have a tough time gaining popularity.

Bottom line, one well written and well thought out article can be worth more than any other marketing campaign or blog you can think of.
