Search Engine Optimization Overview
Search Engine Optimization Overview
So why bother with the search engines? Because they represent the single most important source of new web traffic for any website to date. And over the next decade, search engine optimization (SEO) will be more widely used to generate public awareness and traffic as search engines play a bigger role in information and multimedia gathering.
SEO: Matching Users with Websites
What is Search Engine Optimization? In a nutshell, SEO helps match Internet users with websites offering what it is they are interested in finding. It does so by using a number of methods and techniques that enable the search engines to read and index the webpages of your site, i.e. making the website "search engine friendly".
SEO works by trying to understand how search engines work and what human visitors might search for. This involves making changes to the content, page layout and the architecture of the website, called on-site optimization. Off-site optimization looks at generating web traffic through links.
These two concepts are performed in four ways:
• By addressing the limitations of your website's architecture with respect to a search engine's ability to properly read and index the webpages.
• Identifying keywords and phrases that are relevant to your website as well as the searcher. These keywords and phrases are then written, in a reasonable way, into the content of the site.
• Attracting links from authoritative sites, and targeting those incoming links to the interests of the searcher.
• Analyzing visitor activity on your website, and then looking for way to improve the searcher's website experience.
When these four aspects are done right, you not only help the search engines do a better job of serving their users with the information they seek, the search engines will display your website to the visitors you are targeting.
The Need for SEO
Studies indicate that a large number of potential buyers begin with search engines. SEO is about bringing more visibility to your online business. It's no surprise that more and more business websites are being optimized in order to improve their search engine rankings.
Search engine optimization can be a very complex process requiring a long-term approach. It can take months before results start to show. However, with some patience and planning, the cost-effectiveness of SEO doubles and sometimes triples. As such, it is an important web marketing strategy for success.
