Basic SEO calls for assuring that all images on your website have an Alt Tag. The use of alt tags is used for more than just SEO, it allows the visually impaired to "see" what is contained in the image is and it is proper web accessibility. Web users with auditory impairments and search engine spiders/web crawlers that have no ability to read an image, so besides using an alt tag for the best possible SEO you will want to add captions to images whenever it is possible to do so. A caption will allow you to express brief ideas, it can make a site more informative, and it can help the user of the site immediately assess the relevancy of images, graphics, and illustrations provided on a website and provides an opportunity to creatively include additional keywords on your web page.

Captions are a great place to use pertinent SEO keywords, since the search engine spiders consider captions are web page content. You can use long tail keywords as captions, creating brief sentences that are both informative and traffic drawing simultaneously. It should be noted that when using images, illustrations and graphics on a site that you will want to be very choosy; don't upload huge graphics to your site that take forever to load (make sure all images are optimized), especially for those using dial up modems to access the web. People want to get to and through a website fast and fast information is what web visitors seek; great SEO methods involved optimized image usage that take very little time to download and access. There are a myriad of programs that can optimize graphics such as (free 30 day trials available) Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Fireworks, online sites such as https://www.photoshop.com/ and Image Optimizer that you can use where you can compress your images and make them easier to load if they are large, but take care not to over compress the image: it can make them look pixilated and of poor quality. Remember, to obtain that coveted #1 on Google position, all aspects of SEO must be considered.

Re: Thanks Evan Re: Thanks Evan -
One thing I learned from this report was that the keyword meta tag is really only useful for the first few terms but basically ignored after that, UNLESS you list terms that are not specifically mentioned on the page. If you do the latter, you can be penalised. That was the case for me, because I had terms which were alternative words or phrases instead of actually used.[/quote:2tgxxkiz] Hi Christine, it is debatable whether meta tags are still important for search engine rankings these days so you are better off optimizing tags such as the title (<title>) and headings (<h1>,<h2>) with your desired keywords as they have more weight in major search engine rankings now when compared to meta tags. You are better off listing 5 very relevant keywords, rather than 15 vaquely relevant keywords in meta tags, assuming the major search engines still use meta tags to rank webpages and always make sure the keywords you are aiming to rank for are listed throughout the webpage. [quote:2tgxxkiz]When I checked yesterday, both listings were on page 2, higher up. I am absolutely rock-solid confident I can get it to upper page 1 and Evan's report has been 100% critical.[/quote:2tgxxkiz] That's excellent, if you can tell me the website address and the keywords you are aiming to rank in page 1 of results for, I will try to provide advice to get you there! Kind regards TheAnonymousMan
Re: Search Engine Optimization Re: Search Engine Optimization -
Just curious as to what others are doing to optimize their websites. I have received a page rank 5 from google which is very good in my line of business in comparison to my competition. I am still not coming close to being on the first page for main key word searches though, even though all of the websites ahead of me have a smaller page rank. Does anyone know how this works and what I can focus on? Thanks![/quote:ivyrc6ii] Your Page Rank has little or no effect on your actual search engine rankings ( ie SERPS) Search gives give high PR to websites with BULK of back links, whereas they grant higher rankings to those websites which get good links from related WEBSITES. You need to decide yourself whether you indend to increase the GREEN BAR of Page Rank, or your actual Search engine rankings.
