SEO Tip: Why SEO Companies Create Site Maps (Sitemaps) for better SERP

Today's SEO tip has to do with a simple file that most websites neglect to create or utilize, the sitemap.xml file. Site maps allows the search engine spiders the best chance to index your entire website content. Site maps are actually made to be seen and crawled by the search engine spiders instead of human visitor. By having a site map, the search spiders can easily go through all the web pages within your website. If you have a small site, your need to include a sitemap is not nearly important (providing the pages are organized in the navigation menu) as websites with lots of pages and lots of content.
In order to create a site map for spiders to be used for SEO purposes you need:

1) XML File. This document with .xml extension should be placed in the root directory. This file must have the links to all pages within your website that you wish to be discovered by the search engines. The search engine spider will look for this so that it knows where to go as they index your site. End result will be better search engine [placement, higher search engine rankings and more traffic to your website.

2) Robots.txt. This file opens your xml site map file to search engine spiders. Add the line for sitemap by adding "sitemap: location of .xml" to your robots.txt.
Remember, Best SEO Practices require that the sitemap xml file be updated each and every time website content, website information, or website structure is changed, edited or modified. It is also good SEO practice to place the important links on the top of the xml file so that they can be indexed first.
