Another step in achieving best in class SEO is utilizing the DTD, which stands for Document Type Definition. This SEO tag, places on the first line of any page, tells search engines how the code is written. By communicating this SEO information to the search engine spider, your site can be indexed faster by Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com and others. The advantages of an accurate SEO DTD statement are:

1) Search Engine spiders will not be confused how to index your web page code.

2) Websites will be indexed much faster because the Search Engine spider knows how to mine the content from the code on your website.

3) A DTD statement is required in all W3C compliant web pages.

4) Google can perform monthly updates of your web site quickly.

5) Search engine spiders can go deeper into your pages and index your site for more relevant keywords.

In conclusion, SEO for your web site that produces Top search engine rankings is comprised of many different aspects, with the sum being greater than the parts. Your SEO efforts will suffer dramatically by not following each and every SEO step. Top rankings within the search engines can falter if their are inaccurate or missing DTD statements. It is all together possible that the search engine spiders will not index your website, causing lower rankings and is not part of standards based SEO. The Search engines may even penalize you in their rankings algorithm and decrease your page rank if you have the wrong DTD statement.

Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could be compared to a big popularity contest: A High School Computer Geek and a High School Football Captain who are trying to promote a party. The computer geek tells everyone in school & even hands out 100's of flyers about his party Friday night...what happens? his friends end up showing up and a few new people...even the new people leave right away because it is not what they are looking for. The High School Football Captain ends up just telling a few good buddies, and within hours the entire school not only knows about it, but everyone wants to come, and everyone does come & stay. One defenition of "optimize is "To make as perfect or effective as possibe." How effective are your article marketing campaigns? Could you be distributing content (that is what search engines index) more effectively? In a perfect world, who would you want promoting your website, web pages, and web content? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is determining this perfect & effective way to do this. Jeff
