Quality backlinks ensure that you get visitors to your most interesting content while internal links drive traffic to obscure, but equally important sections of your website. Internal links are important to lead traffic where you want it to go. Internal links are also crucial in getting your visitors to do something on your site, whether they buy a product, subscribe to a newsletter, or join a community.
Here are some pointers for smart internal linking:
1) Place your links where it is most likely to be clicked. The more click-through you get, the more page views you have, the more traffic to your website and potentially the higher your Google PageRank and SERP.
2) Use keywords to explain the content of the link. This will increase search relevance.
3) Do not spam your site with endless linking.
4) If you want to feature a page, direct most of your links to the specific URL of your website.
5) Numerous links can confuse the search engine spider. Use the “nofollow” attribute in your link tag if the link is unimportant so that spiders won’t bother indexing it.
6) Analyze your web traffic. Know what section your readers are most interested in, then use that space to prop other sections in your website with linking.
