The Art of Search Engine Submission
Submitting your website to a search engine for indexing sounds straightforward enough, right? Not so fast, my friend. OK, actually, it is a pretty simple process. However, there are smart and not smart ways to get the job done and the smarter you are, the more success you will have.
Hand-submit your website to the “big three.” Actually, it’s more like the big one, medium two, and tiny three, but Google, Yahoo, and MSN comprise the main search engines to expend your energy on. These three search engines make up more than 80% of the total search engine market share! Each search engine has a manual process for submitting your website to them and you need to be sure you use this manual method for the greatest success. Google, especially, hates to think that your website submission comes from some computer program or automated online service. Sometimes they can tell, so why take the risk? If you don’t know how to find where to manually submit your website, let me know and I will send you the links.
Use automatic submit for the hundreds of “lesser” search engines. You can either use software (do a Google search for “SEO Studio”) or online services (do a Google search for “free website submission” or similar) to help you automatically get your site subscribed. With either of these automatic tools, you may need to fill out some search engine-specific qualifying information, such as description or category and many want you to provide an e-mail address.
One very important tip regarding e-mail addresses is to NEVER give out your real e-mail address (or any e-mail address you care about) throughout this auto-submit process. Instead, use disposable e-mail address, such as is offered by Yahoo, and you can create a special e-mail address for each of all of the search engines you will be auto-submitting to. Then maybe 30 days later, once all of the search engines have had a chance to visit your website, you can simply delete the disposable e-mail accounts and you’re all set – and without all the SPAM.
For either method, when a search engine asks for a website description, have something already developed that will be both catchy and relevant. Be sure to integrate your most important keywords into the website description.
Even if you don’t ever submit your website to search engines, chances are that they will find you anyway. However, for the best success in getting your site indexed as soon as possible, it is best to follow the steps outlines above. And, if you ever do a major website upgrades, you may wish to consider doing another hand-submit to Google, Yahoo, and MSN, just to let them know.
I have seen Google check out a brand new website in as little as two weeks, but typically it’s more like a month or two. Either timeframe is far better than their standard disclaimer about taking months to visit your website for the first time.
The sooner you get your website to search engines, the better. You don’t need to wait until your site is perfect, but make sure you have a fair amount of relevant content developed and in place on your site. This will give search “bots” something good to chew on as they check your website out and will help to ensure a long and happy search engine relationship.
